Consulting-Specifying Engineer - February 2009 - (Page 36) In The News SFPE has new president ichard J. Davis recently took office as president of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Bethesda, Md., for 2009. Davis is an assistant vice president and senior engineering technical specialist with FM Global. A member of SFPE since 1982, Davis has served on the society’s board of directors for nine years and is a member of its engineering licensure committee. In 2000, he was made an SFPE Fellow. SFPE Fellows represent a distinguished group of members who have attained significant stature and accomplishment in engineering. He also served as president of the SFPE New England Chapter and was recognized by that chapter in 1991 with its Richard E. Stevens Award for distinguished service in the interest of fire protection engineering. “Throughout Davis’s career he has made significant contributions to the profession of fire protection engineering by advancing the science and technology that makes our world safe from fire,” said Chris Jelenewicz, SPFE engineering program manager. “He is widely recognized for his work in structural fire protection and smoke management systems.” R Report: 37 million ‘green collar’ jobs by 2030 A Coursin named AHRI chair K eith Coursin, president of Germantown, Wis.-based Desert Aire Corp. has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). The group tapped Coursin at its Nov. 16 meeting in Carlsbad, Calif. An active AHRI member for more than 10 years, Coursin has served as AHRI’s treasurer; chairman of the dehumidifiers product section; and a member of the association’s audit committee, budget and investment committee, education and training committee, and exposition policy committee. Other officers elected at AHRI’s annual meeting include: • Vice chairmen: Morrison Carter, Beckett Gas Inc., North Ridgeville, Ohio; Ray Hoglund, Hill PHOENIX, Conyers, Ga. • Immediate past chairman: David Myers, Johnson Controls Inc., Milwaukee • Treasurer: Harry Holmes, Morrison Products Inc., Cleveland. AHRI’s board also elected 11 vice presidents: • Todd M. Bluedorn, Lennox International, Richardson, Texas • Steven S. Duerwachter, Baltimore Air Coil, Baltimore • Dan Ellis, ClimateMaster, Oklahoma City • J. R. Jones, Rheem Manufacturing Co., Atlanta • Bonnie Kern-Koskela, Maxitrol, Southfield, Mich. • David LaGrand, Nordyne, O’Fallon, Mo. • Michael Lehman, Bard Manufacturing Co., Bryan, Ohio • Edgar M. Purvis, Jr., Emerson Climate Technologies, Sidney, Ohio • Ajita Rajendra, A.O. Smith Water Products, Ashland City, Tenn. • John Reilly, National Refrigeration Products, Philadelphia • Eric Roberts, CES Group, Chaska, Minn. ccording to the Green Collar Jobs Report—produced by the American Solar Energy Society (ASES)—the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries accounted for more than 9 million jobs and more than $1 billion in U.S. revenue in 2007. If current growth trends continue, those numbers could jump to 37 million jobs and more than $4 billion revenue. The research—conducted by Washington, D.C.-based Management Information Services Inc.—indicates that in recent years, the renewable energy industry has grown three times as fast as the U.S. economy. The sectors leading the charge—solar thermal, photovoltaic, biodiesel, and ethanol technology—each showed annual growth of more than 25%. The hottest jobs in the greencollar area include engineers and electrical professionals. “There’s a new sense of optimism in the green economy,” said Brad Collins, ASES executive director. “But while the U.S. could see million of new jobs in renewable energy and energy efficiency, this will only happen with the necessary leadership, research, development, and public policy at the federal and state levels.” Collins said key steps to green-collar job growth include a national renewable portfolio standard, long-term extension of the production tax credit, effective net metering policies, and improved access to electric transmission infrastructure. The report predicted possible outcomes, based on federal and state policy changes. The most modest scenario laid out— assuming only moderate policy improvements—forecasts 19.5 million jobs and more than $2 billion in revenue by 2030. Other report conclusions: • 95% of the jobs are in private industry. • The anticipated 37 generated jobs will represent more than 17% of all anticipated U.S. employment. • Hot job areas include electricians, mechanical engineers, welders, metal workers, construction managers, accountants, analysts, environmental scientists, and chemists. The vast majority of jobs created by the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries are in the same types of roles seen in other industries (accountants, factory workers, IT professionals, etc). 36 Consulting-Specifying Engineer • FEBRUARY 2009
