All LEED-certified projects are now required to earn at least two Optimize Energy Performance points. This program recognizes the firms and engineers winning or placing in two categories: Most Innovative New Construction Project and Most Innovative Rehab/Reconstruction Project. Gold, Silver and Bronze awards will be given in each category. The application is available on CSE’s homepage at www.csemag.com. To qualify, all projects must have been completed after July 1, 2006, but prior to July 31, 2007. Entries are due at CSE offices by Oct. 15. There is a $125 entry fee. D Each entry must be submitted in a three-ring binder and include the application form, entry fee, supporting photography and project description. Entries and photography will not be returned. Winning projects will be featured in CSE’s December 2007 issue and on the magazine’s website. Engineers and firms that submit winning projects will receive a plaque that is suitable for display in office headquarters, along with a congratulatory letter from the magazine’s chief editor and publisher. The letter may be used for national press releases, posting on the winning project’s corporate website and accompanying project RFQs. CSE’s ARC Awards honor engineers and engineering firms that have incorporated unique mechanical, electrical and plumbing design elements into commercial, institutional and industrial building projects. The projects are judged by CSE editorial staff, CSE’s editorial advisory board and other engineers and industry experts. • “How to Address Integration and Interoperability for Campus Mass-Notification Systems,” a webcast that aired on June 21, is available at www.csemag.com. In the blogs at csemag.com David Sellers, P.E., senior engineer with the Portland, Ore. office of Facility Dynamics Engineering, and CSE’s “A Field Guide for Engineers” blogger, has several valuable new postings. Sellers has rapidly followed up a seven-part series on damper tests with several posts, including the following: “Controlling the Environment Requires Understanding the Environment,” focuses on the damper test findings and discusses some of the implications in terms of performance and energy consumption across the country. Next, “Same Problem Different Issues” discusses the impact of an economizer that is stuck in the 100% outdoor air position on two identical systems, one of which is located in San Diego and the other in Key West, Fla. “Unit Conversion Constants; Not Alway Constant” is a blog that resulted from a call from Seller’s colleague, William Acker, president of Acker & Assocs., Green Bay, Wis., and an expert on energy analysis, air emissions and water-vapor transmission and condensation. Acker pointed out that many engineering calculations, including the built-in calculations in some measuring equipment, use engineering constants that are based on the properties of the measured variable at a fixed condition. For instance, a differential pressure based air flow meter might base its flow calculations on air at standard sea level conditions. As a result, measurements may need to be corrected. “Measuring Outdoor Conditions; Not So Easy as You Might Think” is a supplemental blog that takes another look at the damper test series.
