C O M ARC Awards applications due Oct. 15 Site highlights • In “Coolest kid on the block,” Julio Alvear, LEED AP, associate, Syska Hennessy Group, New York, discusses ground source heating pump systems, which he says now rival standard electric centrifugal chiller and boiler machines in energy efficiency For the full story, go to the Green Buildings community at www. csemag.com. • “Peeling the onion: How to design with codes and standards,” is the first in a series of columns by Larry Wilson, P.E., senior vice president, Environmental Systems Design, Chicago. Wilson offers suggestions on how to unraveling all the codes and standards and apply them to a successful design. Go to the Codes/Standards community at www.csemag. com. here’s still time to participate in this year’s ARC Awards, CSE’s annual competition for top MEP projects of the year. Download the 2007 application for Consulting-Specifying Engineer’s ARC Awards at www.csemag.com. This program recognizes the firms and engineers winning or placing in two categories: Most Innovative New Construction Project and Most Innovative Rehab/Reconstruction Project. Gold, Silver and Bronze awards will be given in each category. To qualify, all projects must have been completed after July 1, 2006, but prior to July 31, 2007. Entries are due at the T CSE offices by Oct. 15. There is a $125 entry fee. Mail submissions to: ARC Awards, CSE Magazine, 2000 Clearwater Drive, Oak Brook, IL 60523. Each entry must be submitted in a three-ring binder and include the application form, entry fee, supporting photography and project description. Entries and photography will not be returned. Winning projects will be featured in the December 2007 issue and on the website. Engineers and firms that submit winning projects will receive a plaque that is suitable for display in office headquarters, along with a congratulatory letter from the magazine’s chief editor and publisher. The letter may be used for national press releases, posting on the winning project’s corporate website and accompanying RFQs. The ARC Awards honor engineers and their firms who have incorporated unique MEP design elements into commercial, institutional and industrial building projects. The projects are judged by CSE staff, the CSE editorial advisory board and other engineers and industry professionals. In the blogs at csemag.com David Sellers, P.E., senior engineer with the Portland, Ore. office of Facility Dynamics Engineering, and CSE’s “A Field Guide for Engineers” blogger, in a new series of postings, shares the results of a retrocommissioning project. “In the course of beginning a retrocommissioning process on a lab facility, I came across a bit of an anomaly and in the course of exploring it, discovered some useful resources. So, I thought I would share both with you in the next few posts,” he writes. The facility the facility had undergone a partial renovation of its mechanical systems to replace existing aging machinery and improve efficiency. Much to the owner’s dismay, Sellers says, when electric heat was replaced with gas, the site energy consumption in terms of BTUs increased rather than decreased as a result of the effort, as did the utility cost. “It was this unanticipated, puzzling result that caused the owner to retain my firm to assess and retrocommission the facility and regain control of the site’s energy consumption,” explains Sellers. To get a feel for the performance of the facility relative to its peers, Sellers decided to benchmark it using two different publicly available benchmarking tools that include lab facilities in their data base. Sellers offers a complete description of the anomaly—and how commissioning providers solved the puzzle. Also in the blogs, Editor-in-Chief Michael Ivanovich offers a tongue-in-cheek look at the global competition for arctic resources. • Healthy savings for a major pharmaceutical distribution center were the result of an energy initiative. The company was able to shave nearly $40,000—or 18%— annually from its utility costs due to upgrades to their HVAC control and correction of poor power factor. Not bad for a patient showing no symptoms. For the complete case study, go to the Electrical community at www.csemag.com.
