REED BUSINESS INFORMATION Founded in 1933 Tad Smith, Chief Executive Officer Jeff Greisch, President, Chicago Division READER FEEDBACK Engineers are superheroes I really enjoyed your “Editor’s Viewpoint” in the last edition (CSE, 09/07, p. 5) as well as the related cover for the magazine. Engineers, like superheroes, find satisfaction in identifying and solving problems. It’s the way many of us were made. We need talented writers to continue to remind everyone of the contributions we make to the world so more people recognize and appreciate our efforts. Keep up the good work. DAN ABITZ SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT GEORGE BUTLER ASSOCS. LENEXA, KAN. ing Figure 1, “Machine Room AC System Detail.” The condensate collection system from the indoor unit is shown pumped to an open sanitary waste. Although this is an acceptable point of discharge, the waste should more appropriately discharge to a storm sewer, all codes permitting, or more to the point, to a suitable graywater system or rainwater harvest system. Because we are hip-deep in issues related to water conservation, highly publicized on the pages of your fine publication, it would be in everyone’s best interest if we took stock of our collective knowledge of the issues and applied them to each and every instance possible. Simply discharging the clean water waste to a disposal point is no longer acceptable. Each open-ended pipe on a project must be justified in the eyes of today’s engineer if we’re ever to achieve the lofty goals we set for ourselves. ANTHONY J. CURIALE, CPD, LEED AP ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL BURO HAPPOLD NEW YORK, N.Y. Author responds: I fully agree with the comment. Where applicable code and local authority allow, the condensate waste should be hard connected to the storm waste, if possible. The hard connection will keep it clean, and avoid freeze up from the environment on the roof. Elevators and sustainability I enjoyed reading the article “HVAC and Fire Safety for Elevator Systems” by Talal M. Rabiah, PE, in the August 2007 issue (08/07, p. 36). I have one comment regardTAL RABIAH, PE SUPERVISING MECHANICAL ENGINEER SYSKA HENNESSY GROUP SAN DIEGO (Continued on page 9) Consulting-Specifying Engineer • OCTOBER, 2007 7 http://getFREEmag.com/cse
