The production builder aspects of Wall’s vision allow for a leaner and more efficient operation than a custom or semi-custom builder. Many people believe that a lean culture is created by hyper-efficient processes that allow product creation with minimal human involvement. Remember, though, Wall Homes is a start-up, just three years old. Those processes that builders who have been operating for dozens of years have don’t yet exist in this environment. The leanness is derived from the business model itself — Wall’s vision — and the culture of the people in the company — Wall’s team. In fact, the lack of process frustrates Wall. “You take the concepts for the processes that you developed over years and years,” he begins. “You start a new company and you get to do them again. Those processes are something that we don’t ever feel are as good as they can be. … If we can drop a step, we will.” Underlying all that success are the people, the team that followed Wall to this new adventure, the talent he’s attracted since he started the business. Wall doesn’t ascribe to the “Great Man” theory of business management, which states that every great company has a great man (or woman) leading it.
