The colorful exterior represents the goal of the new hospital—responding to children’s needs. This includes the 3.5-MW electrical needs of the 133-bed, 750,000-sq.-ft hospital. U.S. DOE ANNOUNCES SOLAR CELL INVESTMENT The U.S. Dept. of Energy announced that it will invest up to $13.7 million over the next three years in 11 projects run by nine universities that will develop advanced solar photovoltaic manufacturing processes and products. CANADA LAUNCHES CLEAN ENERGY SOFTWARE Canada’s Environment Minister, the Honourable John Baird, and the Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Gary Lunn, officially launched the latest version of RETScreen, a software tool originally developed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) for renewable energy technologies. The software, which NRCan provides for free, is used worldwide by more than 129,000 people, including architects, planners, investors, and other industry decision makers. commentary by Scott Siddens Senior Editor [PUBLICATION SERVICES] 2000 Clearwater Drive Oak Brook, IL 60523 phone: 630-288-8780 fax: 630-288-8782 Jim Langhenry Publisher jlanghenry@reedbusiness.com Trudy Kelly Assistant to the Publisher tkelly@reedbusiness.com Elena Moeller-Younger Marketing Director elena.younger@reedbusiness.com Eletta Harris Production Supervisor harrise@reedbusiness.com Photos: Marc Berlow Earth Hour: Power to the people Under the banner of saving energy to cut greenhouse gas emissions, the city of Sydney, Australia, did something startling: they turned off the juice on a large scale for 1 hour. Organized by the World Wildlife Federation, the event, which occurred on March 31, 2007, became known as Earth Hour. According to www.earthhour.org, more than 2.2 million Sydney residents and more than 2,100 businesses participated in Earth Hour 2007, resulting in a 10.2% drop in electricity consumption. In 2008, Earth Hour became a global event. It’s impossible to say how many people and businesses participated and how much energy and emissions were saved. In Chicago, the electric utility, ComEd, which supported the event along with Mayor Richard M. Daley, reported a 537 mWh drop (5%) in electricity for the City of Chicago and Northern Illinois. From an emissions perspective, that’s about 840,000 lbs of carbon dioxide. What this means to Pure Power is that for at least 1 hour of 1 day per year, people will annually become highly cognizant of the role that electricity plays in their personal lives, their businesses, and their communities. And they will learn to make decisions about electricity and what their decisions can do, individually and cumulatively. But going without power isn’t always an option. Health, safety, and security measures need power: hospitals, nursing homes, street lights, elevators, security cameras, night-shift manufacturing, and peak-shifted loads meant to avert more power plants. Not only is power needed, but standby and emergency power, too. The environmental impact of such power requirements have to be weighed against the needs of civilization. Perhaps in going without power for an hour, people will realize just how precious it really is.
