Metro Phoenix Relocation Guide 2008 - (Page 24) Phoenix A host of centers have recently completed renovations or new construction in the downtown area. These include the Phoenix Civic Plaza, the five-story Central Library which houses over one million volumes and seats up to 800 patrons, and the Phoenix Art Museum. The Phoenix Central Library is an architectural showcase that cost $43 million. In the heart of Copper Square in downtown Phoenix, the Convention Center has been undergoing a $600 million expansion project. The revitalized, 90-square block area will provide accommodations for meetings and convention destinations. 2006 saw the phase one opening of the West Conference Center, which includes 62,400 sq. ft. of exhibit space, 48,000 sq. ft. of meeting space, as well as a 45,300 sq. ft. multi purpose ballroom. The newly renovated Symphony Hall offers a 2,400-seat theater with full theatrical capabilities. Phase two of the expansion began in late may of 2006, with an expected 2008 opening date, and will bring the total sq. footage of the Convention Center to 900,000 sq feet. The expansion will triple the size of the current capacity and the Center will be among the top 20 convention centers in the United States, positioning Phoenix as a premier destination for conventions.
