Metro Phoenix Relocation Guide 2008 - (Page 27) Phoenix Ahwatukee Foothills To the south of the city of Phoenix is the popular – and gaining even greater popularity and acclaim – area known as Ahwatukee Foothills. Ahwatukee is an Indian word meaning "house of my dreams" or "magic place of my dreams." Most of the city of Phoenix stretches north from South Mountain Park, the largest municipal park in the world. Built out to its eastern and western edges, Phoenix can only grow north or south. Perhaps once considered a barrier to southward development, the massive, 16,500-acre South Mountain Park is now viewed as a boon by the developers who have created new communities. Well-established Ahwatukee (pronounced Ah-wahtoo-key) hugs the park's southeastern border. Future construction of the South Mountain Freeway will make the Foothills' accessibility even better. Close by are the companies of Intel Corp, AlliedSignal, Insight and the Arizona Cardinals. The Kyrene Elementary School District and Tempe Union High School both have outstanding ratings. Mountain Pointe High School and Desert Vista High School also serve the area. Arizona State University is, of course, "next door" in Tempe. The housing of Ahwatukee ranges from apartments, townhomes and patio homes to custom territorial estates – something for everyone. One of Ahwatukee Foothills’ appeals is its convenience to the East Valley and also downtown Phoenix. Prized by residents for its proximity to South Mountain's hiking and biking trails, Ahwatukee is primarily a bedroom community for commuters to commercial centers in Phoenix and its surrounding cities. Ahwatukee also has a well-established retirement area with recreation and community activities, and five nearby golf courses. Mountain Park Ranch, just south of Ahwatukee, is a 2,650-acre masterplanned community that draws families looking for good value for their housing dollars. Mountain Park Ranch offers a diverse choice in housing, from patio homes to large single-family estates. It has three community centers featuring tennis, swimming pools and picnic areas. The Foothills has been named "Best Master-Planned Community" three times by the Home Builders Association of Central Arizona. The Foothills is a 4,100-acre master-planned community that features an 18-hole golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf. Bordered on the east by Interstate 10, Ahwatukee also features retail and light commercial components. Arizona Mills Mall is located nearby in Tempe. The Foothills is distinguished by its scenic desert-mountain environment and abundant opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. More than forty miles of recreational trails wind through the Foothills' petroglyph-marked hills in the shadow of South Mountain. Lakewood and The Pointe at South Mountain feature new and resale homes in addition to several other smaller subdivisions. Predominant prices are between $200,000 for a detached patio home and $1,000,000 for an upscale luxury home. Some celebrities also live in million-dollar-plus mansions here. 27 Relocation Guide™ http://www.ahwatukeechamber.com
