Metro Phoenix Relocation Guide 2008 - (Page 33) Arizona Facts Arizona is the sixth largest state in the nation. he land of southern Arizona was acquired in 1848 when Mexico relinquished it after the war with the United States. The rest of the state was acquired in 1853 through the Gadsden Purchase. On February 14, 1912, Arizona became the 48th state. Few states feature the variety of terrain and spectacular beauty of Arizona. Much of the northern part of the state features large expanses of pine covered mountain ranges, streams and canyons. At 12,633 feet the states highest peak is Humphrey’s Peak near Flagstaff. The Grand Canyon, at the top of the list of the worlds natural wonders grace the northern part of the state. Much of the mid to southern part of the state features the hotter desert valleys and plains. The greater populated cities are located in these areas. T The state is divided into the high Colorado Plateau Province of the northeast and the Basin and Range Province of the rest of the state. The average elevation is about 4,000 feet, the width is 355 miles, and the length is 390 miles. These stats make Arizona the sixth largest state in the country. Bird: The cactus wren (1931). Colors: Blue and old gold (1915). Slogan: In God We Trust. Flag: Thirteen rays of red and yellow rep-resenting the setting sun cover the upper half. The lower half is solid blue. The center of the flag contains a copper color star (symbolizing the state’s copper industry) rising over the face of the setting sun. Flower: Saguaro cactus blossom (1931). Gem: Turquoise.
