The latest plant will employee 1,000, bringing total employment at Intel’s Chandler facilities to 11,000. Smaller electronics firms experiencing growth are Radyne Corp in Phoenix and Jabil Circuit in Tempe. Radyne, which manufactures equipment for the communication industry, has grown to 400 employees. Jabil’s business in circuit board manufacturing has added 250 employees over the last 2 years. Honeywell, a long term Phoenix economic mainstay, is enjoying success and expansion on several fronts. As the largest subcontractor on the Orion manned space program they are scheduled for more than $700 million on the project. Staffing to meet the needs of this project will require 500 new hires. Honeywell is also producing more than 100 components for Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner. Boeing’s 787 program is projected to spend over $1 billion with Arizona contractors and subcontractors, supporting hundreds of jobs. The city of Mesa recently negotiated a land use agreement with a local developer that allows Boeing Co. to continue its helicopter flight paths around the Williams Gateway Airport. Boeing Co was considering moving that operation which provides 5,000 jobs and an overall economic impact of $2.3 billion. In December 2006 Boeing Co. was awarded a U.S. Government contract of $1.2 billion for production of combat helicopters. Williams Gateway Airport is developing as an East-Valley economic engine. Cessna is moving its jet service center from Long Beach to Williams Gateway, with current staff relocating to Phoenix. Embraer is also opening a service center for its jets at Williams Gateway in mid-2008. Employment by these two centers will reach 150 in the first year. Long term planning is underway to make Williams Gateway an international cargo hub with cargo that is now going through LAX to be routed directly to Williams Gateway. Employment expectations for this operation have yet to be established, but are expected to be substantial. In September 2005 locally headquartered America West Airlines merged with US Airways, taking the US Airways name. The now fifth largest US carrier retains its corporate headquarters in Tempe. The new company has about 35,000 employees. Opening a new Tempe operations center and other merger consolidation has increased Phoenix area employment to 9,500. Phoenix is rapidly becoming a distribution hub with its proximity to the California ports and with access to excellent rail and freeway networks. In early 2007 Federated Department Stores selected a Goodyear site for its online fulfillment center that will provide over 800 Phoenix jobs. Amazon.com later announced plans for a center in Buckeye with Phoenix employment expected to reach 1,400. Financial firms continue to expand service and operational facilities in the area. Wells Fargo Consumer Credit invested $33 million to house 1,800 employees in Central Phoenix. Wells Fargo Mortgage Services has spent $10 million on a Tempe processing facility that has added 600 new jobs. Countrywide Home Loans has expanded an operations center in a Chandler campus setting that accommodates 4,000 employees. Other prominent companies adding or expanding facilities in the Valley are Google, AAA and Humana. Google has opened a Tempe office on the ASU campus. Phoenix employment will reach 600 once the initial startup has been completed. The AAA travel and financial services club has opened a new facility in Glendale that will create 1,100 new jobs over the next 3 years. Humana is expected to add 530 employees to increase staff at two call centers, their DMS center in Phoenix and their RightSource center in Tempe. In December 1999, San Antonio based insurer USAA obtained 500 acres in Phoenix for a regional office / customer-service center. Operations began in 2001 with prospects for 15,000 employees in 10 years. Employment through 2007 has grown to more than 4,000 employees, with some Phoenix relocation from Texas. Copper is booming world wide, creating a resurgence in mining throughout Arizona. With mines reopening throughout the state, including Globe, Miami, Superior and Safford, construction employment is expected to reach 4-5,000 with long term Arizona jobs being close to 3,000. As the metropolitan area supporting those operations, Phoenix job opportunities will occur in numerous Phoenix service and financial industries.
