Metro Phoenix Relocation Guide 2008 - (Page 94) Northeast Valley McDowell Mountain Regional Park, one of the largest parks in the Maricopa County parks system, offers excellent hiking, sightseeing and camping. The park is adjacent to Fountain Hills' northern border. Because it is bordered by the McDowell Mountains on the west, the Fort McDowell Indian Reservation on the east and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to the south, Fountain Hills will likely remain at its present 11,340-acre size. There are two annual art festivals that draw over 200,000 people. Situated approximately 20 miles north of Scottsdale at an elevation of 2,500 feet, the temperatures range from 5 to 6 degrees cooler than Phoenix. Low humidity and cooler temperatures lure outdoor enthusiasts to such activities as hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, golfing, and jeep touring. The serene, saguaro-studded landscape, decorated with natural outcroppings of massive sand-colored boulders and teeming with jackrabbits and other desert dwellers, attracts new residents. Carefree has an open, even whimsical approach to life. The town's many unique retail stores and many other businesses are addressed on Easy Street. Two of the several banks are on Wampum Way; and tourists can arrange to meet friends at the intersection of Ho & Hum roads. Golf courses here and in the surrounding foothills are woven into the landscape, making them some of the most scenic in the state. Other nearby recreational outlets include Tonto National Forest, which borders the towns on the north side, and the Verde River, a favorite of river runners. People seeking solace in nature, with only the city lights far in the distance to remind them of civilization, will want to call Carefree/Cave Creek home. Anthem The planned community of Anthem, is located 35 miles north of Phoenix, between the Daisy Mountain foothills and 1-17. This development, created by Dell Webb has much to offer its residents. A variety of housing, commercial, medical, educational and recreational services serve to attract many retirees, families, and those who wish to commute south to Phoenix and the surrounding cities workforces. Although currently unincorporated, the city of Phoenix is slated to annex the community by 2020. The current estimated population of Anthem is nearing 40,000 and is a leader in master planning to accomodate a wide range of residents. Anthem offers golf courses rivaling those in the Valley of the Sun, open space park like communal areas, and recreational activities for all. For the health enthusiast, there are basketball and tennis courts, a gymnasium complex with two swimming pools, the latest exercise equipment, aerobic classes, a rock climbing wall and sweeping mountain vistas that offer hiking opportunities. Residents enjoy a sizable water park with slides and large landing pools. Important for families, are the new schools, with excellent sports facilities, libraries and theater complexes to enhance the learning experience. Educational amenities are also enhanced with the close proximity to ASU West, Glendale Community College, and Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management. Near Anthem, off Highway 17, the frugal and wise shopper can enjoy saving money at an outlet mall complex. AREA STATISTICS AREA: 11,340 acres. LIBRARY: Maricopa County Branch, 12901 N.
