Many people get their cast-iron skillets, pots and Dutch ovens handed down
from their parents or grandparents. Known for their ability to retain heat,
this heavy-duty cookware has been a family staple - for cooking on the
stovetop, in an oven and over a campﬁre - for generations. Whether its
biscuits and gravy in the morning or a hearty steak after a long day,
these dishes are ideal for cooking up a hearty meal.
Please note these recipes are written to be cooked on a stove or
in an oven. To convert to campﬁre cooking will take a little trial and
error, but the International Dutch Oven Society does offer a "2 times,
minus 4" tip to achieve a temperature of 325 degrees. Take the size
of your Dutch oven in inches and double it. Use that number of coals
split evenly between the top of the oven and beneath around the edge.
Now move four more coals from the bottom to the top to achieve 325
