Heavy vehicle makers, telematics providers strive to add more features while simplifying startup.

growth in recent years, but it is still a challenging new technology for the many fleet owners who haven’t yet joined the connected world. The infrastructure is evolving rapidly as wiring, software, and other challenges are addressed by a range of suppliers. The widespread availability of cellular links has made it possible for vehicles to stream data to a monitoring station, letting owners analyze fuel consumption, vehicle location and speed, load levels, and other parameters. Many fleet owners find that the wealth of available data can bring major improvements in efficiency.

Telematics has seen rapid

One of the key factors that is helping telematics provide benefits without a lot of effort is that much of the data that users want are already available on the vehicle. All they need to do is to tap into in-vehicle networks so the communications system can give users input that will help them see how efficiently their vehicles are operating. “Most of the data customers want, such as instantaneous fuel consumption, is available on the CAN bus,” said Landon Sproull, Chief Engineer at Peterbilt Motors Co. “Systems have to access and supply the right data; you can’t clog the bus by offering everything.”
