FROM APPLE PIE TO XYLOPHONES: A YEAR OF NEW INNOVATIONS

From having some fun with Pi Day and the National Day of Giving
to premiering new STEM programming, 2016 was a year of new
ideas and achievements.
Pi Day

Pi is a mathematical constant and part
of every math teacher's curriculum.
Pi Day, March 14 or 3.14 is the day math
lovers celebrate this revered number with
festivities that include pie related treats. It
was also the inaugural SAE Pi(e) Challenge
to take a pie in the face and bring
awareness and support to SAE's education
programs. Former SAE President Dan
Handcock kicked off the event with the
first pie in the face. To see some of the

National Day of Giving

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving
fueled by the power of social media and
collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday
following Thanksgiving and the holiday
shopping events Black Friday and Cyber
Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the
charitable season, when many focus on
their holiday and end-of-year giving.

It is also a day that brings to light the
importance of volunteering. With
the support and a generous matching
gift from former SAE President Cuneyt Oge,
100% of the board participated with a gift in
support of SAE's education programs.

AWIM is Making Music

In the newest A World In Motion Making
Music Challenge, primary age students
explore sound and vibrations, learning
how the human eardrum works and
exploring concepts such as longitudinal
and transverse waves. Using the
story, "Sleep Soundly at Beaver's
Inn," students work in teams to set
goals, build knowledge, and design
and build a musical instrument for
testing and presentation. This unique
addition to AWIM programming was
made possible through the generosity
of the General Motors Foundation.
