SAE Foundation Annual Report 2016 - 17

THE SUCCESS OF 2016

T

hroughout the pages of the Annual
Report, you have read the stories
about the students, teachers and
volunteers impacted by SAE's STEM
education programs, scholarships and
awards. This important work was made
possible through your generous and
continued support.
In 2016, the SAE Foundation exceeded
its fundraising goal by over $1 million,
raising over $3 million. The Foundation's
achievements strengthened the SAE
leadership position in STEM education
while providing opportunities to improve
operational excellence. A cost per dollar
raised of eight cents has allowed 92%
of funds raised to directly impact our
mission to inspire curiosity in STEM. 46%
of donors increased their financial support
showing clear confidence in programming
that works.
Over 112,000 AWIM students raced JetToy
cars, measured straw rocket distances
and designed musical instruments to learn
about sound, vibration and the workings
of the inner ear. SAE International
received accolades and endorsements for

AWIM from state-level STEM groups and
inclusion in the STEMWorks database,
endorsed by Change the Equation. This
designation defines AWIM as a national
research-proven STEM solution. Most
importantly, AWIM made a direct impact
on students. After completing one AWIM
challenge, 94% of students developed an
increased interest in exploring math and/
or science concepts. And 72% of students
displayed a significant increase in math
and/or science scores.
Student engagement in the Collegiate
Design Series continues to grow at a
record pace, reaching 15% more students
than 2015. 63 teams, made up of over
9,900 university students, designed,
built and competed with vehicles that
demonstrated their engineering prowess
and creativity. The CDS program reaches
the best and brightest students globally;
12% of the participating students
represented Asia, Europe and South
America. The AutoDrive Challenge (SAE's
first student-design challenge focused on
autonomous driving) officially launched as
the next generation of CDS programming,

designed to build the future workforce
focused on autonomous mobility.
SAE scholarships assist in developing
the future STEM workforce by helping
students achieve their dreams of
becoming an engineer. SAE's scholarship
program received a record 5,500
applications, a 64% increase over the
previous year. SAE awarded over $69,000
to 27 deserving undergraduate and
graduate students.
Perhaps the most satisfying recognition
that an individual in any profession
can achieve is peer recognition of
accomplishments. SAE administers more
than 60 award and recognition programs
and co-sponsors three programs in
cooperation with sister societies. In 2016,
SAE honored 186 industry leaders and
innovators. Visit awards.sae.org for a
complete listing.
The programs being nurtured by the
Foundation are developing tomorrow's
workforce. These programs have a
strong track record in identifying
students with STEM talent, keeping
them engaged throughout their

education and, ultimately, result in
the development of future scientists,
engineers and leaders.
