SAE's Collegiate Design Series
(CDS) is equated with extreme
engineering that goes beyond
the university textbook. CDS
is a hands-on classroom that
gives students the opportunity
to design, build, and test the
performance of a real vehicle.
Most team members spend their
time elbow deep in engines,
perfecting their vehicle's
performance. One member of
the Northern Illinois University
Motorsports Team is critical to
their success but contributes in a
very different way.

Adam Rawski is a junior,
pursuing a marketing degree
at Northern Illinois University.
Being a part of the NIU Formula
SAE team was something
he always wanted to do, but
thought he had nothing to
contribute. "My first semester
at NIU, I didn't even think that
joining the formula team was
possible for me - a marketing
student. However, they needed
help with marketing and
business and I knew it wasn't an
opportunity I could pass up."
Marketing is not the only talent
that Adam brings to the team.
Despite tragically losing an eye
to a rare childhood cancer, this
CDS team member has been
driving since he was eightyears-old. Adam's father got
him interested in Go-Kart racing
which lead to his other passion,
as an instructor for driving
supercars for Xtreme Experience
and AMCI, a company that
unveils new vehicle models for
major manufacturers.
Currently, Adam is working on
the business presentation for

the competition in Lincoln,
Nebraska and set up for their
HRT18 once it has been built.
"Being a part of this team is
so much more than experience
on my resume. It's about
learning how to work together
on a project that can have a
bigger impact on the world
through innovation and fresh
new ideas."

Already a semester deep
with the team, Adam has
shown his worth by designing
sponsorship "how to" guides
for future teams, producing
team t-shirts, and is working
on recruiting and getting an
advisor from the college of
business to assist the team
when he graduates. "My job on
the team consists of conserving
the work we do that will help
guide the students who will
pick up where we left off when
we graduate."
