Here are some highlights of the new tax provisions that particularly affect forest landowners and related businesses. Page 14 By Linda L. Langner he US Forest Service’s most recent Resources Planning Act (RPA) Assessment examines the ways expanding population, increasing urbanization, changing land-use patterns, and climate change could profoundly impact the nation’s forests and rangelands in the future. The assessment’s projections are influenced by a set of scenarios with varying assumptions about US population and economic growth, global population and economic growth, global wood energy consumption, US land-use change, and climate change from 2010 to 2060. The assessment is available at treesearch.fs.fed.us/pubs/41976. The RPA Assessment is mandated by the Forest and Rangelands Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974, which requires the Forest Service to prepare an assessment of renewable natural resources on the nation’s forests and rangelands every 10 years. Although the report is titled the “2010 RPA Assessment,” the research underlying this report was conducted from 2005 to 2011. The report was prepared in 2012, completed in August 2012 for printing, and officially released on December 18, 2012. The research was conducted by a team of Forest Service scientists and their partners at universities, other agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Here is a summary of the team’s key findings: T Figure 1. Projected cumulative change in the area of major nonfederal land uses in the conterminous United States, by Resources Planning Act Assessment (RPA) scenario, 2010–2060. Land development will continue to threaten the integrity of natural ecosystems. Land development already strongly influences natural ecosystems. Whereas urbanization tends to convert ecosystems, low-density development in more rural landscapes tends to fragment natural ecosystems. Population and economic growth will fuel the expansion of developed and urban land uses, with increases ranging from 41 percent to 77 percent (see Figure 1). Forestland is most affected by urbanization By Joseph M. Smith, Source staff writer n 2005, the US Forest Service released the documentary The Greatest Good as part of its centennial celebration. I found it to be a remarkable film for several reasons, not the least of which was that it was the first time I had ever seen forestry depicted on a screen, big or small. Since then, I’ve written three articles about the use of documentaries to create awareness of what forestry is, what foresters do, and I (See “Films” page 4) Industry News 9 Society Affairs 12 Science and Tech 17 Continuing Ed. None of this, however, compares to in-thewoods, on-the-job experience. A forester’s first job out of forestry school is, in many ways, just another stage in his or her education, but one that comes with a paycheck. Neil Kissler graduated from Oregon State University’s College of Forestry in 2009 with a B.S. in Forest Operations Management, along with a minor in business management. Kissler was one of the first graduates of this relatively new degree program from the college’s Department of Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management, which adds business operations to traditional forest-management studies. Today, Kissler is more than three years into his first job at Longview Timber LLC, a Longview, Washington, company F The American Elm: Majestic, Imperiled, Renewed Daniel C. Rangelands are projected to decline at a slower rate and may be more threatened by low-density development and fragmenting agents such as oil and gas development. The loss of forestland contributes to reduced growth in total forest inventory, reduced forest carbon stocks, and reduced tree canopy cover.
