Surgical Technique Videos in Foot & Ankle
International
We are launching a new and exciting opportunity to communicate technical aspects of operative procedures using
focused video content. We are now soliciting inclusion of
videos from all accepted FAI articles with an operative technique description in the text. Linking video to scientific
content is the way orthopedic trainees and practicing surgeons educate themselves today and will become even more
important in the future. The Editorial Board has embraced
this direction by creating a new platform for authors to
share content.
Videos will be posted with the online version of the FAI
article and on a video supplement page of the journal
website. Here is a link (http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/
full/10.1177/107 1100717706154) to the first video which
we have solicited for an article to be published in the July
2017 FAI issue.
Notably, the current FAI contributor agreement gives the
American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS)
nonexclusive rights to use and distribute FAI supplements
(including videos) for AOFAS educational purposes, such
as posting on the AOFAS Physician Resource Center
(PRC). It is important to note that the nonexclusive nature
of this agreement allows the author to use the video for
other purposes, in contrast to some other video sites. Key
features of the video program will include the following:
(1) authors will be encouraged to submit a technique video

to accompany and enhance their article within 20 days after
acceptance so that it can be included within the text of the
online article and highlighted in the print Table of Contents
with a video icon (articles submitted within 60 days can
still be linked to the article online but will not appear within
the text of the online article); (2) videos will be expected to
focus on the major elements of the procedure (eg, equipment needed, positioning, critical steps described in the
article, postoperative dressing/protocol); (3) videos will
need to meet basic standards for resolution, formatting, and
duration to maintain quality and effectiveness; (4) videos
must comply with the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) regulations and remove
any identifiable information on the patient; and (5) submissions cannot include industry advertisements or logos.
Specific details about submission and video resolution are
included in the Instructions for Authors of the journal. The
article and accompanying video content will be posted in the
online version of your article at FAI in perpetuity.
