backgrounds, including age and radiographic severity, which
might have affected the efficacy of the PRP treatment.8,21
Fifth, we excluded patients with a history of ankle fractures.
As mentioned previously, patients with primary varus OA
were treated because it was the most frequent etiology in our
clinic. However, posttraumatic OA was reported to be the
most frequent cause of ankle OA,10 and the results of this
study might not be the same in this patient population.
Finally, we were not able to show the number of patients
who achieved clinically meaningful reduction in the secondary outcomes because the minimal clinically important differences have not been established for the JSSF scale and
SAFE-Q scores. Although we found statistically significant
improvements in these outcomes, they might not have
reached clinical significance.
In conclusion, an ultrasonography-guided intra-articular
injection of PRP administered 3 times at an interval of 2
weeks significantly reduced pain in patients with ankle OA,
with no serious adverse effects. PRP treatment was safe and
effective and may be an option for ankle OA. Future studies
with a longer follow-up, a control group, and a different
treatment protocol are warranted to further clarify the safety
and efficacy of PRP treatment.
