lateral). Imaging was assessed at the most recent follow-up
for evidence of subsidence, component loosening, and osteolysis as previously described in the literature, union of the
syndesmosis, range of motion, and sagittal plane motion
(Figure 1).20 Subsidence was measured on a PACS (Picture
Archiving Communication System; CareStream, NY). Each
patient's first postoperative and final follow-up images were
compared side by side to evaluate for evidence of subsidence.
The PACS instrumentation was used to draw lines parallel to
the proximal end of the tibial component and the distal end of
the talar component on each image to measure the difference
between the 2 images. Medial and lateral subsidence of the
tibial and talar components were recorded for each AP radiograph. The same process was used for lateral radiographs and
anterior and posterior subsidence was recorded for each
patient.
Patient Outcomes
At the time of final follow-up, postoperative questionnaires
were used to evaluate patient-centered outcomes. The Foot
and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM), visual analog scale for
pain (VAS), and Short Form-12 (SF-12) Health Survey
scores were obtained to assess perceived dysfunction and
quality of life. VAS pain scores were obtained as a measurement in millimeters over a 10-cm line marked at one end
"no pain" (zero) and the other end "worst possible pain"
(100) and reported as a score out of 100. Preoperatively, a
VAS score was available for all patients, but at the time of
