There are big tragedies, such as Columbine (the killings there happened 10 years ago), Katrina and Virginia Tech, that instantaneously generate global news coverage. Then there are tragedies, such as sexual abuse or suicide, which traumatize a smaller circle of family and friends. The thing these various crises have in common is that people– often young people—are in terrible pain; and youth workers are called on to help, whether or not they feel adequately prepared to do so. Our hope for this issue of YouthWorker Journal is that the articles and expert insights we have gathered regarding crises can help you in your hour of need. Of course, we pray you never need this wisdom; but we’re providing it so you can do a better job of walking alongside and caring for the hurting people you encounter in your ministry.
