YouthWorker Journal - March/April 2009 - (Page 1) March/April 2009, Volume XXV Number 4 The professional resource for youth ministry Publisher Salem Publishing by Chap Clark Page One Associate Publisher Rick Edwards Senior Editor Chap Clark Editor Steve Rabey Assistant Editor Lois Rabey A Decade After Columbine April 20, 1999. Killings at Columbine High School. I remember the images as if I’d seen them yesterday. Images of helicopters in the sky, heavily armed SWAT agents running across a parking lot, kids rushing from doors and windows, parents and bystanders weeping behind police barriers, ill-informed anchors and anxious observers trying to make sense of it all. In the 10 years since two troubled boys killed one teacher, a dozen students and themselves, we have lived through our share of tragedy, including 9/11, which took the focus off Columbine for many people. Insurance companies call tragedies like Hurricane Katrina “acts of God.” What a destructive deity that phrase describes! Tragedies such as Columbine and Virginia Tech are disasters we bring upon ourselves. They create such pain and devastation that we wonder if we ever will be able to feel truly safe once again in our society, which never does very well with pain or sorrow of any kind. Then there are the personal tragedies, such as the death of a loved one, suicide or sexual abuse. When they strike those outside our immediate circle we may feel a twinge of empathy; but when we are directly impacted, they pack a punch every bit as powerful as any of the “major” disasters. We may not consider ourselves equipped well enough to understand or deal with the fallout from calamities, whether “big” or “small.” But pain, suffering and loss are all around us; and the church is called to respond. That’s why we have chosen this sad anniversary to take on issues of suffering, brokenness and loss. Our prayer is that we will all get a little bit better at helping people in their times of need. Let us know what you think, for this is a conversation that must be at the center of thoughtful and real youth ministry. Associate Editor Amy L. Lee Editorial Consultant Tracey L.
