President’s Message Anthony J. Vizzini, Ph.D. College of Engineering and Applied Sciences-Western Michigan University tony.vizzini@wmich.edu SAMPE is Advancement As we continue the exploration of our society we come upon the second word in its title – Advancement. SAMPE is definitely about advancement. We naturally think about advancing material and process engineering. As a technical society we are interested in creating new materials, learning more about their properties, applying them to new applications, and doing things previously undoable. Our members work with each other across corporate boundaries to advance their knowledge and capabilities. Cooperation turns into collaboration which in turns advances the use and application of materials. While it is true that SAMPE is concerned with the advancement of material and processing engineering, SAMPE is focused on the advancement of our world. We look for applications to reduce the weight of vehicles to decrease the carbon footprint of our transportation and shipping systems. We work in wind energy applications to transition the world to sustainable sources of power. We work in the biomaterials arena to synthesize scaffolds to replace or to repair bone structures. We work in civil infrastructure to extend the useful lifetime of degrading bridges or to construct architectural icons that serve and inspire. We are learning that we are part of the dialogue occurring globally as to the role of materials solving the problems that face each of us. The members of SAMPE advance the human condition through the creation and exploitation of knowledge. At this time in particular, SAMPE is poised to advance our agenda on a global front. In a few months we return to Malaysia with SAMPE Asia 2012 to further increase the impact of the SAMPE brand. We as a technical society are exploring how best to optimize the contributions of our membership worldwide while respecting the diversity that we each bring to the organization. SAMPE’s successful Materials Summit brought individuals together, many who are not members in our society. They came together under the SAMPE flag to share their insights. How we advance ourselves to continue the dialogue at the next level will be a distinguishing mark of our society. In advancement we recognize the value of our collective view. SAMPE’s voice provides a unique vantage to those who seek to advance the global agenda on materials. As global as the discussion has become, the most important aspect of advancement is on the smallest stage. SAMPE encourages, enables, and enhances our personal advancement. As educated individuals we recognize the need to constantly update our knowledge base. We advance through the continuous attainment of new knowledge, enhanced skills, and better understandings. SAMPE enables this through its many educational venues. We can be passive in this advancement through attending conferences, symposia, or workshops around the world that bear the SAMPE brand. We can be active in this advancement through contributing our abilities and sharing our knowledge with other members and participants. Yet the greatest advancement in SAMPE that I see occurring is the advancement of another. I am grateful to those many mentors who have helped me to achieve the things that I have achieved. I have advanced through so many kind gestures. I have learned from many individuals. SAMPE is indeed about advancement – the advancement of the human condition, the advancement of a global society, the advancement of one’s self, and the advancement of another.
