Materials & Products Textile distributor, Gepco Inc., is now offering specialty carbon fabrics. Spread carbon tow and woven fabric use carbon fiber bundles that have been widened and flattened to form a thin shaped spread yarn. Prepreg sheets are thinner and easier to get resin impregnated. When layered, they are void free resulting in superior strength at a lower cost. The smaller weaving angle and even distribution of resin provides higher mechanical strength that is more difficult to be cracked. Thermoplastic resin can be used. Gepco Inc. also carries carbon and hybrid multiaxial knitted fabrics. This includes: uniaxial carbon, double bias carbon, triaxial carbon, aramid/glass uniaxial hybrid, aramid/glass biaxial hybrid, and carbon/aramid double bias hybrid. These reinforcing fabrics for composites provide higher strength with lower weight, resulting in optimal fiber polymer composites. Other materials including thermoplastics can be applied. For more information, contact: mkim@gepcoinc.com or visit www. gepcoinc.com. Triton Systems, Inc. (Triton), ASSET division, announces the RC1000™, its full scale roll-to-roll atmospheric plasma coating system. The RC1000™ system can be used to functionalize woven and nonwoven textiles, plastic films, paper and other rolled products. Based on our proprietary atmospheric pressure plasma liquid technology, the RC1000™ enables new functionalities via true surface modification without changing properties such as air permeability of textiles, or weight and appearance of treated rolled substrates. The RC1000™ allows us to immediately introduce our Invexus™ brand of liquid repellent, antimicrobial and insect repellent coatings that can be used on technical textiles and specialty films. The main features of RC1000™ and its ASSET process are: • Suitable for rolls up to 72 inches wide • Designed for a wide range of rolled goods (textiles, paper, membranes, films) • Environmental-friendly process (low energy and material consumption, no water or solvent used - hence no waste stream) • One step coating and curing process (no oven drying/curing required) For more information, visit: www.assetcoating.com. 3M Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division announces the launch of new Low VOC Aerosols and 3M™ Hi-Strength 94 ET Spray Adhesives with up to 50% reduction of VOCs, giving customers more “future friendly” adhesive options that help them meet air quality and environmental goals. As more attention is paid to VOCs—volatile organic compounds—and their role in air quality, 3M is offering these next generation materials for customers interested in pursuing LEED® credits and other environmental certifications. The new Low VOC Aerosol Adhesives are low-emission versions of the company’s trusted aerosol adhesives. These products include 3M™ Super 77™ Multi-Purpose Spray Adhesive – Low VOC <25%, 3M™ Hi-Strength 90 Spray Adhesive – Low VOC <25%, and 3M™ Foam Fast 74 Spray Adhesive – Low VOC <25%. Additionally, 3M™ Adhesive Remover – Low VOC <20% and 3M™ Silicone Spray – Low VOC 60% complement the line. Performance benefits have been achieved with the low VOC versions of 3M Super 77 Multi-Purpose Spray Adhesive, which offers a longer tack and finer spray pattern than the current offering. In addition, 3M Hi-Strength 90 Spray Adhesive – Low VOC <25% and 3M Foam Fast 74 Spray Adhesive – Low VOC <25% deliver higher solids, better peel strength and a longer bonding range. Users of the existing 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Hi-Strength Postforming 94 CA Spray Adhesive will find added benefits in the new 3M Hi-Strength 94 ET Spray Adhesive. This product offers higher tack for easier bonding, an increased bonding range, and more versatility in substrate bonding to soft foams, lighter weight materials and more porous surfaces. 3M Hi-Strength 94 ET Spray Adhesive is available in aerosol, cylinder, and bulk versions, while 3M Scotch-Weld Hi-Strength Postforming 94 CA Spray Adhesive remains available in both cylinders and bulk. Both 3M Scotch-Weld Hi-Strength Postforming 94 CA Spray Adhesive and 3M Hi-Strength 94 ET Spray Adhesive are low VOC and meet the most stringent air quality regulations in the U.S. For more information, visit: www.3m.com/lowVOCaerosols. Harnessing its high-tech materials expertise, Bayer has developed Hygard® BL80 Shock-Wave Sentinel as an advanced solution that establishes a new level of blast resistance without the drawbacks of traditional approaches. The patent-pending Hygard® BL80 can be integrated into the design of a structure, helping to protect most buildings and occupants from bomb attacks while preserving an open, attractive appearance. Shock-tube and open-range testing demonstrated Hygard® BL80 can withstand 80 psi peak pressure and 380 psi-msec impulse, approximately 30 percent above the most demanding requirement. Hygard® BL80 will be manufactured according to ISO-9001 compliant processes and procedures. Key benefits include: •Protects people and building structural integrity •Provides appealing architectural aesthetics •Preserves building functionality •Can be used to retrofit existing structures or designed into new structures SAMPE Journal, Volume 47, No. 6, November/December 2011 34 http://www.gepcoinc.com http://www.gepcoinc.com http://www.3m.com/lowVOCaerosols http://www.assetcoating.com http://www.grandiandt.com http://www.grandiandt.com
