Industry News BTG Composites Inc., an advanced composites and FRP consultancy with over 45 years experience in numerous composites technologies, announced the new revision and update to its web site at www.BTGComposites.com. Dr. Scott W. Beckwith, BTG Composites president noted that the company has been supporting the international composites industry in a number of market segments ranging from high performance aerospace technologies to traditional composites used in the infrastructure and commercial markets as well. Dr. Beckwith noted that BTG Composites has a strong background over the years in providing not only training and educational support but also process development and failure analysis support in a variety of technologies. BTG has been particularly active in providing technical advice and services within the areas of product liability, litigation, patent infringement, trade secret lawsuits and advanced materials/structural failures. The new web site provides an excellent overview of the technology support areas that BTG Composites Inc. serves within our M&P community. GE Aviation and Emirates have signed a 12-year OnPointSM solutions agreement for the Emirates fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft. The agreement will include maintenance and inventory support services of various avionics, electrical power and mechanical products for the Boeing 777 aircraft. Emirates and GE have established a strong relationship and cooperation. As one of the world’s fastest growing international airlines, the company operates GE90-powered 777-300ERs/-200LRs and represents the largest B777 fleet worldwide. This contract is the first Systems OnPoint solutions agreement with Emirates and will cover Emirates’ current fleet and firm orders for a total fleet of 135 Boeing 777 aircraft – the largest fleet in the world. OnPoint solutions are flexible, long-term commitments designed to meet customers’ unique service needs. Backed by GE’s world-class support, these solutions help lower cost-of-ownership and maximize assets for GE customers. For more information, visit: http://www.emirates.com/. Siemens has expanded its industrial software portfolio with the acquisition of Vistagy, Inc., Waltham, Massachusetts, USA, a leading supplier of specialized engineering software and services with emphasis on designing and manufacturing structures made of advanced composite materials. An agreement to this effect was signed in early November. This acquisition allows Industry Automation, a Division of the Siemens Industry Sector, to continue to enhance its position as the world’s leading supplier of industrial software. The parties agreed not to disclose the terms of the acquisition. The transaction is subject to customary approvals, and is expected to close before the end of 2011. Companies that use composite materials like carbon fiber components in their products are faced with the task of further reducing costs and time-to-market in order to sharpen the competitive edge composites offer. With their unique combination of low weight, high strength, and durability, composite structures are already used extensively in the aerospace industry and for rotor blades of wind power turbines. Composite materials will continue to experience more 38 widespread use – primarily in the automotive and marine industries – as the complexity and time required for developing and producing composite structures is reduced. This is precisely the aim Siemens is pursuing by adding industryspecific engineering software to its industrial software portfolio for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). Already today, Siemens is among the technology leaders for the automation of production lines for carbon fiber components. With the acquisition of Vistagy, Siemens will become the only company worldwide to support the whole value creation for carbon fiber components with its software tools – from product definition and development to manufacturing and service.
