SAMPE Japan (JISSE-12) Tokyo, Japan November 9-11, 2011 SAMPE Japan’s 12th JISSE event in Tokyo drew an excellent number of attendees over the full 3-day symposium and exhibition this year. Prof. Nobuo Takeda, Symposium Chairman from The University of Tokyo, and his organization committee developed a very strong technical program to match the ever-growing exhibition. The 3-day symposium featured ten distinguished plenary lectures and three keynote lectures during the program. The ten plenary lectures were: • • • • • • • • • • • Nano-Engineered Composites – Prof. I. Verpoest Development of an Aircraft Torsion Box with an Integrally Stiffened Thermoplastic Skin – A. Offringa Strategies and Challenges for Realizing Lightweight Mass Production Automobile by Using CFRTP – Prof. J. Takahashi High Performance Pitch-Based Carbon Fiber and Its Application – H. Ohno The UK National Composites Centre – Building on the Science Base to Support Industrial Exploitation of Advanced Composites – M. Wisnom and K. Potter Towards Japanese National Composites Center – M. Kiyama Recent Advances of Lightweight Composite Pressure Vessels for Aerospace Applications – Prof. X. He The Lightweight Body Structure Technologies of Lexus LFA – Dr. N. Kawamura Challenge for Introduction of Carbon Fibre into Mass-Production Vehicle – Dr. R. Schütz Carbon Fiber Strategy at Automobili Lamborghini: From Manual Lay-up to Automated Higher Volume Processes – Prof. P. Ferabolli Composite Structure, Design, Engineering and Manufacture Since 1970 – G. Kimura Three keynotes were presented on two themes – Textiles and Automobile Applications. The textile keynote was given by T. Gries, J. Klingele and M. Linke on “Future Preforming with Textile Technologies.” The automotive keynotes were given by S. Francoise on “Accelerating the Use of Composites in Automotive” and by C. Chang on “Next Generation Designs and Manufacturing Processes for Innovative Chemistries for an Electric Concept Car.” The session tracks covered nanocomposites, green composites, polymer matrix composites, multifunctional materials, metals innovation, structural health monitoring, non-destructive evaluation, design and analysis, aerospace applications, automobile applications and traditional crafts. The student competition consisted of oral presentations and poster sessions. The exhibition was held in the Tokyo Big Sight facility where it appeared this year’s exhibition has grown significantly. Overall, JISSE-12 was a great success. And for our members of the SAMPE Japan chapter, who have and continue to struggle after last springs earthquake and tsunami, we could not be more pleased.
