The Lubin Award is given to recognize those who have made significant contributions in the field of material and process engineering. It is one of SAMPE’s highest honors. The George Lubin Award allows us to remember the man and helps us to initiate his strong desire to teach, lead, and reward advancements in both technology and world friendship. The award is presented only when there is a candidate that meets these very high standards. The award was last presented in 2006. It is with distinct pleasure we announce Dr. Leslie Jay Cohen as our 2012 Lubin Award Recipient. Lubin Award 2012 Dr. Leslie Jay Cohen Citation: The Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering presents the George Lubin Memorial Award to Dr. Leslie Jay Cohen in recognition of his technical accomplishments in development of high temperature and shielding materials for protection of the U. S. Air Force ballistic missile fleet, his program management skills for development of the fast burn booster, his marketing efforts which have enhanced automated manufacturing of composite materials and his key role in the digital thread and automation to achieve lower cost fabrication and enhanced affordability of composites. His tireless leadership in uniting the world of materials and process engineering through international connections with SAMPE chapters around the world, his efforts to transfer and integrate composites technology from all countries, particularly Russia and Germany, and his role in establishing the SAMPE Foundation for education of next generation M&P engineers have fostered and advanced the profession of materials and process engineering and the interests of SAMPE for more than forty years. His efforts reflect great credit upon himself personally and are worthy of this recognition by the society. Dr. Cohen has distinguished himself as a leader in high temperature shielding materials, composites automation, and program management for over 40 years. He has also been instrumental bringing the global materials community together, especially with Russia and Germany. For the past five years Dr. Cohen has expanded his international relationships and participation to become the general chairman of the Germany Government composite conference. Recently he used his leadership role as SVP of Strategic Technology at Hitco to engage the industrial base to ensure industrial preparedness to manufacture DoD, NASA and Civil Aviation composite Aerostructures. He has been recognized not only by the US Government for his contributions to national security but also received the USSR Gold Award for Science and Technology, and awards from the Taiwan Government in materials science. Some of Dr. Cohen’s technical contributions include: development and technology transition of special shielding materials for Strategic Weapon Systems to insure survivability to man-made hostile environments; upper stage launch vehicle structure for the Delta launch vehicle and the External Protection Material (EPM) for the MX Missile; and high temperature carbon/polyimide primary substructure for the Advanced Maneuvering Re-entry Vehicle (AMARV). He has authored over 50 technical papers. Dr. Cohen has also been a very strong SAMPE contributor as well – starting the SAMPE Foundation, initiating several SAMPE overseas chapters, and serving as general chair at several SAMPE international conferences. He continues to show tireless leadership in uniting the world of materials and process engineering through international connections with SAMPE, as well as using the SAMPE Foundation to foster future M&P leaders.
