SAMPE 2012|Baltimore May 21-24, 2012 SAMPE 2012 returned to Baltimore, enjoying a huge success in both the floor exhibition and the spot-on technical program that was developed by the Baltimore-Washington and Great Lakes Chapters. The event was one of SAMPE’s strongest ever in recent years, with over 350 companies exhibiting in a sold out exhibit hall that saw record crowds attending the show. SAMPE changed the programming structure to hold the two primary keynote addresses to a later start time as well as to then allow exhibit hall attendees a 3-hour, non-technical period to fully experience the exhibits. As a result, the exhibit hall was filled with interested and decision-making show attendees. SAMPE 2012 attracted 350 exhibiting companies – a 40% increase over the previous Baltimore shows. Alongside the exhibition, over 250 technical presentations and eight tutorials were presented at the conference. In total 4,200 delegates attended the conference and exhibition. Delegates came from 30 countries, 47 states. "SAMPE is on an upward trend," Dr. Anthony Vizzini, Dean at the College of Engineering and Applied Science at Western Michigan University and SAMPE international president said. "Our industry has done well through the recession and it seems that its impact, though significant, is behind us. SAMPE’s success isn’t solely linked to the economy, though. This SAMPE event offers education and networking opportunities that are vital to the success of today’s M&P professionals." SAMPE 2012 had two excellent keynote presentations that provided a strategic look into future trends and future needs in several critical materials and process engineering areas. On Tuesday, a packed ballroom of over 450 attendees heard Dr. Cyrus Wadia, Assistant Director, Clean Energy and Materials R&D, The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, provide an inside into a very critical program. His presentation on “The National Materials Genome Initiative (MGI): A White House-Led Strategy on Advanced Materials Manufacturing”, covered the approach and strategy for moving materials and process engineering forward at a much needed time in our history of M&P technology. This is an arena where SAMPE has taken the lead and will continue to support critical M&P technology growth at pertinent levels within the technology and educational communities. The keynote presentation on Wednesday, also packing the ballroom, was given by Larry Ilcewicz, Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor for Composite Materials, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Using his many years of vast composites experience in the FAA, Ilcewicz gave an extensive overview of the need for continued pursuit of “Composite Safety and Certification Initiatives” within our technology community. His presentation included a wealth of historical information as well as “lessons-learned” and the needs that still exist in terms of current and future composites applications. The SAMPE 2012 technical program also included not only the 250-plus technical paper presentations, but also four Featured Lectures in several key areas: Inflatable Structures, Automotive Industry Advances, Sustainable Infrastructure Systems and Composites in Exploration. All of these were well attended by conference participants. Five strong panels also provided significant interaction between the panelists and the attendees in a number of technical and strategic program areas. Overall, the two sponsoring SAMPE chapters developed a very interactive 4-day program that represented a great balance between “technology” and “strategic long-term planning” that was well-suited for SAMPE’s current and future M&P goals. SAMPE 2012 provides a great venue to help companies to network and to strengthen their presence in the M&P community," Vizzini said. "Unlike any other professional organization, SAMPE brings advanced M&P vendors, suppliers and professionals across technology spectrum from basic to applied." “We are very, very pleased with the response to SAMPE 2012,” Gregg Balko, SAMPE’s Executive Director stated. “The number of international conference delegates and exhibitors has established SAMPE as the venue where the world’s advanced materials engineers meet and do business. Our members are already planning for SAMPE 2013 which will return to Long Beach, CA.” In fact, exhibit booth sales for the SAMPE 2013 exhibition in Long Beach are trending far ahead any previous year. But it’s not the exhibition alone that draws attendees to SAMPE. An outstanding technical conference is already being planned. 50 SAMPE Journal, Volume 48, No. 4, July/August 2012
