President’s Message Dr. Katie Thorp U.S. Air Force Research Lab, WPAFB Katie.Thorp@frontier.com It is hard for me to believe that I am writing my final installment of the President’s Message for the SAMPE Journal as your SAMPE International President. This has been an incredibly busy year for SAMPE and for me personally. Over the past year your SAMPE Board of Directors and Executive Cabinet have dealt with several major initiatives such as building new strategic partnerships to strengthen our brand and product offerings within North America as well as examining changes to the governance structure of the society to better serve the global market. Your SAMPE leadership is continually looking for ways to advance the materials and processes community by providing superior technical information, innovative networking opportunities, and expanding market exposure. Our strategic decision to partner with ACMA to create the must-attend composites event in North America starting in the Fall of 2014 is an example of our drive toward providing the advanced materials community with the kind of events that will meet your needs for years to come. The joining of ACMA and SAMPE allows for a one-stop-shop for information exchange and market exposure which will facilitate emerging trends in our industry such as automation, digital manufacturing, high-rate production, and out-of-autoclave processing. I am confident that this new partnership will generate new technology advancements and market expansions which will propel the materials and processes community into a new era of creativity and prosperity. In addition to planning toward the future with this strategic SAMPE/ACMA partnership, your SAMPE leadership has also spent the year working through many of the critical details needed to transform our governing documents so that we are well positioned to meet the needs of the expanding global materials and processing market. A number of dedicated SAMPE volunteers have donated countless hours to carefully reviewing and rewriting our bylaws and other documents to position us for a strong future. The vote to form the new Global SAMPE and North America SAMPE region are scheduled to take place at our May Board of Directors Meeting in Long Beach, California. This will truly be a monumental time for SAMPE. Serving as your International President has afforded me some wonderful opportunities to learn about our materials and processes community on a truly global scale. The position has given me the great pleasure of attending several amazing SAMPE events including a high-quality event in Lucerne, Switzerland last September, a record-breaking event in Charleston, North Carolina, and the always-thrilling experience of SAMPE in Paris. I never imagined that my year as SAMPE International President would be filled with so many great experiences and interactions with amazing people. I have learned a lot technically, grown professionally, and formed friendships that I am confident will last a lifetime. I encourage each of you to consider how serving in SAMPE can expand your professional network and personal leadership experience. I am convinced that you will find involvement in SAMPE to be a truly rewarding experience. It has been my sincere privilege and honor to preside over SAMPE during such an exciting time. I am confident that SAMPE is well positioned to guide our materials and processes community toward many exciting new technology advancements and global market arenas, and I eagerly await to see what the future holds for SAMPE and our technical community.
