iNdustry news Ten MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (M.I.T.) female student teams were sent across the United States to share their experiences at MIT and to encourage girls to consider an engineering career. The two M.I.T. representatives chosen to visit Utah were Jacqueline (Jackie) Sly, a Mechanical/Oceanography Engineer from California and Vibhuti Agrawal, a Biological Engineer originally from India. Jackie and Vibhuti visited 670 female students from eleven junior and senior high schools. MIT’s purpose is to motivate future female generations about the opportunities, growth and demand for STEM careers. Their main topics included: •Women currently hold only 20% of engineering jobs •Companies are looking for more female engineers •Engineering students are not nerdy or geeky •You CAN get into M.I.T. and other engineering schools •M.I.T. is looking for students from a broad range of backgrounds, and will work with families and students to attend MIT. •Many interesting fields have engineering components, such as fashion design, medicine, sports, and architecture. An engineering degree can be combined with these and other specialties to give the graduate greater strength of background. The girls listening to the presentations were encouraged to take as many math and science courses as they possibly can. Jackie and Vibhuti emphasized that even if a student doesn’t get the highest grades in math and science, the determination to attend multiple STEM classes is important Jackie and Vibhuti also honored the Utah Chapter of the SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF MATERIALS AND PROCESS ENGINEERING (SAMPE) with a Massachusetts Institute of Technology presentation during their monthly meeting in the USTAR Building at the University of Utah. Both women shared highlights about MIT’s Women’s Initiative. The SAMPE Foundation has provided funds to M.I.T. for several years in support of the Women’s Initiative. In summary, Jerome Berg, Utah SAMPE Chair and ATK Associate, exclaimed, “We are so fortunate to have two of the school districts in Utah selected for such a prestigious opportunity to be visited by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I would like to recognize all the hard work of Neil Hancey and JoAnn Matern, DATC Executive Foundation Director and Utah SAMPE Board Education Chair, for making this opportunity available to Utah students and industry representatives. Many of us remember how role models like Jackie and Vibhuti coached or encouraged us to pursue something we thought were not achievable. My thanks to M.I.T. for paving a pathway for future Utah Engineers.” For more information, contact: james.larson@datc/edu. NDT SOLUTIONS, INC. The reference unit combines inertial data and GPS data to provide the user with high-accuracy continuous location, heading, pitch, and roll data in both stationary and moving vehicles. Boeing’s state-of-the-art Ka-band phased-array SATCOM antenna system allows customers to take advantage of the significant increase in bandwidth offered by next-generation Ka-band satellites to transport data between aircraft in flight and the ground network. Boeing developed these communications antenna technologies to improve the capability of platforms to remain networked while mobile. For more information, visit: http://www.geaviation.com/.
