S Six SAMPE Student Chapter Funding Awards 2012-2013 AMPE annually sponsors a competitive program for our SAMPE Student Chapters to compete for funding to support a wide range of projects and functions. The purpose of the funding is to provide our student members a more meaningful and more memorable SAMPE experience. The SAMPE Student Chapter is the breeding ground for life-long SAMPE professional membership, as such, the success of Student Chapter is critically important to the future success of SAMPE itself. The student chapters are challenged to think both, “in the box” and “out of the box” when it comes to submitting proposals. This year’s winners cover a lot of ground in their proposals. Let’s look at the range of projects that were funding in this year’s round of awards. University of Delaware SAMPE Student Chapter (winners every year since the 2009-2010 competition) • Delaware Aerospace Academy “Space Beam Challenge” - In operation since 1990, the Delaware Aerospace Academy provides hands-on training and experience in aerospace-related activities, promoting interest in these topics to future engineers and scientists. The academy is located on the University of Delaware campus and takes place for several weeks each summer. A graduate student at UD-CCM started the “Space Beam Challenge” activity in 1990. Since then, the SAMPE-UD Student Chapter has taken on the responsibility of organizing this activity to ensure continuity. After a brief introduction to composite materials and manufacturing processes, the cadets are given a tour of the Composites Manufacturing Science Laboratory. After the tour, the cadets are introduced to the design of composite sandwich structures, which are used frequently in aerospace applications where strength-to-weight ratios are critical. Next, the cadets design and construct their own composite “space beams” from kits supplied by SAMPE-UD. Materials in each kit include steel, aluminum, glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy, and carbon/epoxy for the face sheets and highgrade foam, polystyrene foam, and balsa wood for the core. Beams are judged based on their load-to-weight ratio. After a night of brainstorming, the cadets assemble their "space beams" with the help of our SAMPE volunteers. These beams are then tested via 3-point bending at the UD-CCM. The tests are performed and videotaped by SAMPE-UD students, who then compile a report for each beam study to be presented to the cadets later that evening. Before seeing the results of each group's test, the students are asked to explain why they chose the lay-ups they did for their beams. The highlight of their evening is seeing their beams broken into MANY pieces. While many of the materials used for the Space Beams project are donated, additional funds are needed to defray the costs of materials that cannot be obtained through donations. Materials that need to be purchased for the upcoming year include metallic face sheets (aluminum and steel), epoxy adhesive and disposable gloves and aprons for the cadets. This is where the SAMPE Student Chapter funding award is critical. • • 20 University of Delaware Engineering “Cool Stuff” Camp - The University of Delaware hosted a group of elementary school students who were interested in science and engineering to attend a week-long camp, in which they learned basic engineering principles from various professors, students and volunteers. As part of the science and engineering camp, SAMPE-UD organized and led various activities which promoted interest in composite materials and processes. SAMPE -UD received very positive feedback from both the children as well as the teacher chaperones that accompanied them during the week. UD also received a publication in the college periodical. [1] The camp relies primarily on donations for the materials used; however, additional funds were needed to help defray the cost of additional materials for demonstration as well as safety equipment such as gloves, aprons and safety glasses. Additional Funded Activities – In addition to the two efforts described above, the University of Delaware SAMPE Student Chapter requested and received funding to support the recruitment of new student members where new member’s first-year SAMPE fees are covered; travel support for Baltimore/Washington Chapter meeting attendance as well as local tours; and finally support for the E-Week Seminar and Panel Discussion event.
