San Antonio Newsletter - Summer 2007 - (Page 2) Uplifting Renovations Land at the San Antonio Airport San Antonio is the seventh largest and third fastest growing city in the nation. To keep up with a record number of passengers and the growing demand for an easier and faster airport experience, the San Antonio International Airport (SAIA) is expanding its wings in an over $636 million dollar renovation to include new terminals, additional parking and more roadway capacity. SAIA Spokesman David Hebert says the expansion project should make San Antonio an even more ideal destination for groups of all sizes. “The new terminal facilities will convey a modernity and freshness that should be appealing to meeting professionals and the airport will be more ‘user-friendly’ with additional parking space and renovations to the existing roadway system.” Part of the renovation is to tear down the smaller of two existing terminals and rebuild it from the ground up to be over 204,000 square feet with eight gates. A third terminal will be built with enough room for 11 additional gates. These expansions combined with having major airline carriers, will help make San Antonio an easy destination to travel to and from for your next event. According to Hebert, besides offering an easier and faster airport experience, another goal of the airport expansion is to reflect the “flavor” of San Antonio with Spanish tiles, public art and vibrant colors throughout. “When you land at some airports, it’s hard to tell what city you’re visiting because nothing in the architecture or amenities is distinct or identifiable,” Hebert says. “We want to make sure that passengers know the minute they step off the plane that they’re in the ‘Alamo City,’ and we’re going to ensure that through the use of local materials and artwork which reflect the South Texas culture.” The airport renovations are scheduled to be completed by 2010. Preserving the Past – Restoring Market Square Historic Market Square, considered the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico, greets every morning with the alluring aroma of fresh coffee and pan dulce (Mexican sweetbread) while the colorful décor of boutiques and the sounds of mariachis leave no doubt as to the festive flare of the district. Originally constructed as a farmers’ market in the late nineteenth century, Market Square has seen many incarnations in the decades since. Today its plazas are lined with cafes and terraces, Latin artistry and an eclectic collection of shops. Market Square also offers many authentic venues for special events including the charming Mariachi Bar, civic art galleries and Museo Alameda—an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute. Recently the people of San Antonio elected to use capital funds to complete $3 million in renovations to this celebrated area. Included was the restoration of the original façade of El Mercado (the portion of Market Square that houses a diverse mix of shops). The plazas and courtyards that connect the alcoves of the market also received a face lift as they were repaved with deep red bricks and complimented by regional landscaping. New outdoor light fixtures that accent the architecture of Market Square illuminate the way for early morning and evening strolls. Soon to come, another $1 million in renovations will put the final touches on the remainder of the market. Careful restoration is preserving the traditional design of this district that is so close to the Latin roots of San Antonio. Even with the addition of new strokes to this old world masterpiece, Market Square remains the heart of San Antonio with a décor that is as bold and warm as the culture itself.
