The latest offering is Museo Alameda—The Smithsonian in San Antonio. The dramatic, hot pink structure is a perfect fit for historic Market Square. Combining art, history, cultural education and live performance, Museo Alameda tells the unique story of the Latino experience in America—past, present and future. Having just opened in mid-April, the 39,000 square-foot venue has 20,000 square feet of exhibition space, and offers indoor and outdoor options that can accommodate receptions up to 150 and seated events up to 100. The first organization in the nation to sign an affiliation agreement with the Smithsonian Institution—Museo Alameda takes full advantage of access to the collections, exhibitions, and educational programming of the Smithsonian. The McNay Art Museum From Diego Rivera and Pablo Picasso to manuscripts and sculpture gardens, the McNay Art Museum invites guests to step into a masterpiece. This enchanting institution houses works in a 1920’s Spanish Colonial home amid 23 acres of beautifully landscaped terrain—ideal for outdoor events. With the recent announcement of the McNay’s $50.8 million expansion, the San Antonio arts community is anticipating unprecedented growth to this already impeccable venue. Additions will include a 45,000 square foot exhibition facility to be designed by internationally-famed and awardwinning architect Jean-Paul Viguier. This annexation will allow for the McNay to host larger exhibitions and increase its ability to showcase a greater amount of its exquisite collection. Museo Alameda, the first Smithsonian affiliated museum in the nation, depicts the story of the Latino experience in America. The Witte Museum San Antonio’s beloved Witte Museum has welcomed families since 1926 with scientific and historic exhibits that are fun and educational for every age group. Located in Brackenridge Park, a short distance from downtown and on the banks of the San Antonio River, the Witte offers permanent exhibits that include dinosaur skeletons, cave drawings, wildlife dioramas, exhibits in 2008 to include The Genius of Leonardo, an exhibition of 40 machines built by a group of skilled scientists and craftsmen after an in depth study of Da Vinci’s designs. Also in 2008, Our Body, The Universe Within, will reveal the mysteries of the human anatomy through a riveting presentation. In addition, soon a massive $50.8 million expansion will add 30,000 square feet of exhibit, event, and restaurant space to the museum’s foot print, as well as a center for rivers and aquifers and a parking facility for more than 300 vehicles (the parking garage will be completed in cooperation with Brackenridge Park). Briscoe Western Art Museum The upcoming Briscoe Western Art Museum, scheduled to open in the summer of 2009, will add a new dimension to the burgeoning San Antonio art scene along with upscale meeting space. The one-of-a-kind museum will be devoted to celebrating the art, people and history of the great American West with an emphasis on the western art of San Antonio and the South Texas Region. Included will be an arts and education center as well as an artist in residence program. A renovation of the former San Antonio Library and Hertzberg Circus Museum, to cost approximatly $18 million will provide more than 40,000 square feet of gallery and exhibition areas.
