San Antonio Newsletter - Winter 2007 - (Page 2) Just footsteps away from the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and thousands of hotel rooms, the River Walk is one of Texas’ biggest attractions. Right Off The River When planners think San Antonio – they think "transportation savings" as the River Walk is one of the most compact, walkable options in the country. Here are just a few reasons why: The main meeting venue – the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center – is literally on the River Walk – the three-mile urban oasis of restaurants, shops, and hotels. When we say "on" the River Walk, one needs to understand that the River Walk actually flows under and through the convention center, a turnaround loop for the River Walk barges is under the convention center and many of the meeting rooms on the river level open right up to the River Walk. It is not uncommon for meeting attendees to step out of a meeting and load right up on river barges for a reception, dinner, or transport to their hotel or special event venue. San Antonio's city center is filled with nearly 12,000 hotel rooms within a 14-block radius from the convention center. Many are an easy walk to the center. Again, many hotels are on the River Walk, which is a unique stroll that takes you right to the convention center in San Antonio. One of the city’s strong points is the vast number of historic and unique theme venues that are walkable from many of our larger hotels. Examples include historic La Villita (the "little village of San Antonio" across the street from the center); HemisFair Park (at the center’s back door); the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum; Southwest School of Art & Craft; Rio Plaza, Sunset Station, Institute of Texan Cultures and more – all just blocks away. Because San Antonio’s downtown stays "lively" all night – with lots of folks out strolling the River Walk or eating meals at many of the downtown restaurants, delegates have also expressed feeling comfortable walking around at nearly all hours – with a great feeling of comfort and safety. This is one of the many reasons why the River Walk is often referred to as the "The World's Largest Hotel Lobby." make their event memorable and complete, whether it is a party for thousands or a special evening for the Board of Directors.
