Scotts Valley
A modern town within an historic community
Originally settled as a valley of farms Scotts Valley - located amidst the area’s dramatic redwood forests in the western region of the Santa Cruz Mountains - is a small suburban community with a proud link to the past. Once a stagecoach stop between San Jose and Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley’s deep history goes back more than 150 years. Today, the city serves as a vacation spot for both leisure and business travelers. The Hiram D. Scott House, built in 1853 is a Santa Cruz County Historical Trust Landmark, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. An array of other historical landmarks and heritage trees pay homage to the proud past of this quaint community. The peace and charm of life in Scotts Valley serve in harmony with the town’s businesses. Innovation, growth and commerce are masterfully blended with small-town charm and a strong sense of community, providing a welcoming environment for families and visitors alike. This family-friendly atmosphere even attracted celebrated movie director Alfred Hitchcock, Scotts Valley’s most famous resident. The Hitchcock family lived in a mountaintop estate for three decades beginning in 1940. In more recent years, film projects have taken place in nearby state parks, utilizing Scotts Valley as a hub for the cast and crew. Scotts Valley hosts a number of fun, family-friendly, cultural and seasonal events. Cheer on the kids at the annual Children’s Fishing Derby at Camp Evers Park. Scotts Valley’s Skypark is the setting for many popular events. Drink in the art and culture at the Scotts Valley Art and Wine Festival where the work of local artists is on display alongside samples from area wineries. Or celebrate America at the Fourth of July celebration at Skypark, complete with a parade and dazzling fireworks show. During the holidays, the annual lighting of the community Christmas tree is a big draw. In addition to its many events, Scotts Valley is home to an array of local parks for tennis, skateboarding, basketball and fishing. Golfers will enjoy the short layout of the 9-hole executive-length Valley Gardens Golf Course. This hidden gem is surrounded by pine trees and is a peacefully quiet place to improve your game. There’s even something for Fido at Skypark’s dog park, including a special area for both large and small dogs. A social gathering place for owners and a fun way to frolic the days away, Skypark’s dog park welcomes off-leash pets, so there’s plenty of room to run and play. Scotts Valley is a mere four and a half square miles but its central location proudly serves as the gateway to the breathtaking redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains: a perfect spot for outdoor lovers. Spend the day hiking, bicycling or backpacking. Or explore a collection of boutique, family-owned wineries on the summit of the Santa Cruz Mountains, all nearby. Just six miles from the beaches of Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley is a perfect destination.
