These were the days where 96 colors of Crayola crayons suddenly ran out of ordinary names, and colorless paper was suddenly dyed all shades of robin’s egg blue, granny smith apple and purple mountain’s majesty. But what of the lesser credited art tool, the colored pencil? Perhaps its color gamut is of shorter breadth than its Crayola counterpart, but learned techniques can produce an immeasurable amount of textures and styles. Create a range of values using… Color Layering Colored pencils layer easily, unlike painting or pastels, so unique colors can be created to add life to the drawing. However, too much color will cause the paper to resist further adherence or wear holes on the surface, so start lightly and add gradually. Hue Changing Overlaying colors with white, black, gray, or complementary colors alter the shade and tone of a certain color. Pressure Varying A simple soft or heavy hand can modify the color saturation of the pencil. If the pencil begins to flake, use a brush or a tissue to lightly remove it, so as not to leave streaks. Mistake Removal Should wax build up on the surface, wipe the paper with a soft tissue and spray lightly with 2-4 layers of Krylon workable fixative. The tips are simple and the task is only as daunting as the artist makes it. The world is filled with all shades of joy and pleasure, so let the paper embrace what the pencil can capture.
