Sarasota Arts & Culture Magazine - September/October 2007 - (Page 25) : : Exhibitions A David Byrd Retrospective: Social Issues in Graphic Design August 17-September 19: A David Byrd Retrospective: Social Issues in Graphic Design showing at Selby Gallery, Ringling College of Art and Design. Artist reception with presentation by David Byrd is September 6, 5:30pm. Gallery I: Posters created by David Byrd when he collaborated with rock impresario Bill Graham for a number of bands are showcased. Some of the bands include The Allman Brothers, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, the Grateful Dead, the Mothers of Invention, Leon Russell, the Jefferson Airplane, Santana and Elvis Presley. The famed artist/illustrator has produced innumerable posters for Broadway plays and musicals, and has designed sets for major Hollywood productions since the early seventies. This exhibition highlights Mr. Byrd’s career since his first poster for the Fillmore East Ballroom. A signed poster created specifically for this exhibition will be available for purchase. Gallery II: Contemporary graphic designers whose work reflect a philosophy of social conscience are exhibited, including Richard Valicenti of Thirst/3ST, Illinois; Amy Franceschini of Future Farmers, California; Cristina Gastaldello and Massimiliano Patrignani of ma:design, Italy; Antistatic, Ohio; and Adam Knott, California. Daniel Miller, Ringling College alumnus (Graphic & Interactive Design, 2003), will be featured in the Selby Gallery windows as an example of a Ringling College graduate who has pursued a career in graphic design that reflects an emphasis on social responsibility. Selby Gallery on the Ringling College of Art and Design campus is located one-half block east of 2700 North Tamiami Trail on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Way.
