For Janet Mishner, every event in her life links to its counterpart later on. The Baltimore native firmly believes that “you do everything for a reason in the grand scheme of things.” Mishner inundated both her work and play with art, receiving a degree in art education, studying painting for seven years and obtaining a certificate of graphic design. Primarily, this colorful artist who accents every sentence with laughter was a realistic painter. Motherhood prohibited a serious devotion to the art, but after Mishner’s youngest of three entered kindergarten, her voracious curiosity to take painting more seriously led her to the Baltimore Museum of Art. By volunteering as a docent, she realized that painting realistically was not her passion. “I needed to understand art and what I was doing in the context of art history. I needed to understand why Jackson Pollock’s work was on the wall at the museum,” she says. For three years, Mishner drank in the Monday education days, when the exhibiting artist would explain his work. “It was like getting a master’s in contemporary art history,” she says. After deeming her education sufficiently up to par, the time came to learn about herself as an artist. Initially, she used the human figure as the subject of her paintings. Until her creative nature propelled her in a different direction. “I wanted to use the figure as a point of departure, not make it look like what it is. I wanted to make it mine,” she explains. Her mother, an artist herself and Mishner’s first inspiration, suggested studying color under Gladys Goldstein. “I never looked at another person again! I painted expressions and communicated narratives using the figure and color,” she says. “Use of color is a very important part of my art now, too.” The art of which she speaks is Fabulous Faces, a whimsical collection 34 : : arts and culture magazine
