Arts & Culture Magazine - January/February 2008 - (Page 18) SARASOTA EDITION publisher’s note rchitecture, as defined, is the art of designing the structure of anything. The dictionary states simply: the art or practice of designing and constructing buildings. We in Sarasota understand so much more in the word ‘design’. From the famed Ringling College of Art & Design to the head start programs that cultivate the creative energy in creating from crayons and building blocks, Sarasota is expanding into a heritage of residential, commercial and public art that bears witness to a design philosophy of world wide integrity. Architects design. Sculptors design. Whether it is preparing a preliminary sketch, or fashioning artistic work, it is all design. From the historical renovation of the 1926 Sarasota Times Building, to a mansion on Manasota Key with its $70,000 custommade entrance, in this issue we feature the creative members of our community who are ‘Designing for Life’ here and internationally. Architects Guy Peterson, Jonathan Parks and TOTeMS show how they differentiate among their peers with contemporary and environmental diversification. In ‘Space: The First Frontier,’ writer Kevin Costello explores the relationship between architectural and sculptural spaces. The Sarasota Season of Sculpture has begun again, bringing with it the controversy of having an opinion: Is it “ART” or is it “TRA?” Knowing we all base our opinion from our lifestyles and beliefs, we are letting our on-line readers voice their opinion. We invite you to review all the sculptures and vote for your favorite, even make a comment on our magazine website, www.artsandculturemag.com. In this New Year we thank all our supporters and our readers as we acknowledge our first year anniversary. Our pledge to you is to expose Sarasota’s artistic gems and talent through our printed and on-line versions. We look forward to a new year of cultural awareness and prosperity.
