For two days, visitors can spend time in the homes and studios of local artists and/or art patrons. According to Kenney DeCamp, “It’s a major event. Practically every member gets involved, sitting in one of the houses, selling tickets, working with the artist—whatever needs to be done.” Now in its 37th year, this year’s tour will feature six artists in five homes and studios—sculptor Judy Pirkey, painters Jeff Schwartz and Betty Savenor, watercolorists Douglas Teller and Sherren Baughman, and painter/sculptor Florence Putterman. Two of the participants share a studio. It’s a great opportunity to meet and talk with working artists on their own turf and watch them demonstrate aspects of their art. The tour is self-guided. For a $20 donation, people can visit the homes in any order from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 14 and 15. The guide book contains maps, instructions and advice on how to make the most of the experience, as well as extensive information about the artists and their homes and studios. Also as a part of the Tour, the works of other local artists will be on display and for sale at the Galleria at the Ringling College of Art and Design. This year’s exhibitors are Jamie Barron, Micole Bredean, Gwen Fryer, jewelry designer Robert Farrell, Jamie Kirkell, Marlene Lawrence, David Utz and sculptor Marci Weisgold. Says Judy Fiala, “This is worth doing because it educates people about fine arts and helps the artists by giving them exposure. If we can teach people to see with a free eye and learn to appreciate all kinds of art—realistic, abstract, post-modern—even if it’s not always to their taste, we will have achieved our goal.” Douglas H.
