The festival, which takes place in downtown Sarasota at Main and Lemon Street from 5 p.m. to midnight, is a free event and everyone is invited, whatever their heritage. Festival producer and owner Yovany Alas says he is expecting as many as 14,000 to 20,000 people at a festival that keeps expanding. The then-annual event began on one downtown block in autumn 2006 with 8,000 attendees, and will now be held twice a year. March 8 will feature a wide range of Latino music—like Mariachi, Salsa, Cha cha and traditional Cumbia from Colombia—by Alas’s band, which has 11 to 13 musicians (including his wife Lydia singing) and two beautiful dancers. The festival will feature other dancers as well, in traditional costumes from many Hispanic and Latino countries, and vendors, including booths with aspects of American culture, like temporary tattoos and massage. “I want the Hispanic/Latino culture to blend in with American culture, and I want to introduce Americans to what we do,” says the Cuban-born Alas, a US citizen who has lived in Sarasota for 16 years. The festival is a fund-raiser for Alas’s non-profit organization, The Academy of Latin Arts and Science, whose mission is to provide free cultural enrichment to underprivileged children in the large population of Colombians, Peruvians and Mexicans living in Sarasota, Bradenton, Arcadia and Port Charlotte. The academy teaches music, dance and music theory, and plans to add classes in financial responsibility and English as well. “Helping the community is what is big in my heart,” he says. Among the many things it does, the academy encourages businesses to donate musical instruments to underprivileged Hispanic and Latino children. : : Music Mar 3 :: Jazz Club of Sarasota. 2 pm, 8 pm.
