ABA Banking Journal 5/08 - (Page 15) briefing ABA Resources New kit helps with safety and soundness communications New from ABA Communications is a free-to-members safety and soundness communications kit, available online at aba.com. The kit is designed to help banks communicate with their customers and communities in turbulent economic times, when it can be a challenge for bankers to find the right words to reassure customers about their bank deposits, and the financial system as a whole. The kit includes an issue summary that can be referred to when handling media or customer inquiries, a consumer statement stuffer, camera-ready print ads, a sample newspaper op-ed article, a Q&A, and links to additional resources. All of these elements can be downloaded from ABA’s website. Go to www.aba.com/comtoolshome.htm and click on “Safety and Soundness Communications Kit.” Take a break from ABA’s CFO Exchange in Kansas City, Mo., to visit the Liberty Memorial. Dedicated on Nov. 11, 1926, this Art Deco-styled monument is the National World War I Memorial of the United States and houses the National World War I Museum. Teach Children to Save Day breaks record More than 10,500 bankers from across the country participated in the ABA Education Foundation’s National Teach Children to Save Day on April 29. “As these numbers show, bankers fully embrace their role as financial educators and especially so during these tough economic times,” ABA Chairman-elect Art Connelly said in written testimony to the House Financial Services Committee last month. “Our individual institutions and our industry as a whole are uniquely suited to helping stop the cycle of financial illiteracy.” Started by the ABA Education Foundation in 1997, the Teach Children to Save program has educated more than 2.3 million students on the responsible use of money. Banker participation more than doubled compared to last year. Through the program, bankers share their expertise with children and young adults through lesson-based games and activities that explain the basics of saving money, how interest makes money grow, how to create a budget and how to distinguish needs from wants. With hands-on scenarios and lessons styled like “Show Me the Money” or “Wheels and Deals,” bankers make learning fun. “Bankers have embraced their role as financial educators,” said ABA Education Foundation Director Laura Fisher. “Financially educated people are better equipped to weather a storm with an understanding of how to use their resources effectively.” For a look at this year’s participating banks, go to the ABA Education Foundation’s website section at www.aba.com/abaef. It provides a comprehensive review of the issues, including the management of both physical and electronic records and a review of the legal and compliance concerns.
