Moving toward a more perfect union I’VE LONG BEEN PROUD OF THE ROLE ABA has played in bringing together diverse elements of the banking industry in common purpose. That unifying role is about to be significantly enhanced with the merger of ABA and America’s Community Bankers. It’s a union many bankers have been advocating for years, and we’re pleased to have their support. We’ve also been encouraged by the success of similar association mergers in more than 20 states. In fact, I’ve received several emails since the June announcement from bankers and state association executives testifying to the benefits of the trade group mergers in their states. So what are those benefits? What can ABA and ACB members expect from the new ABA? In short—more. More expertise. The association’s combined staff of more than 390 employees will be able to offer guidance on topics ranging from wealth management to mortgage lending to antimoney laundering. And they’re just a toll-free phone call or e-mail away. More opportunities for training and professional development. ABA is one of the oldest names in the training business, with offerings that include certifications, AIB courses, the Stonier Graduate School of Banking and dozens of specialized conferences, schools, and telephone briefings. ACB, with 115 years under its belt, has strong credentials of its own and offers specialized programs that ABA does not. Bringing both sets of professional development offerings together means bank employees— from the executive offices to the back room— will have access to top-notch resources targeting just about every line of business in banking. More networking. Bankers attending conferences will have a larger and more diverse pool of colleagues with whom to exchange ideas and experiences. Often such networking is as valuable to conference participants as the content presented by speakers. More leverage. Imagine the pull that an organization representing 95% of the banking industry’s assets has with industry suppliers. Our enhanced bargaining power will help us deliver the best deals on industry-supporting products and services. More power in Washington. The new ABA will be able to speak for the nation’s entire banking community. That’s a claim no other bank trade group can make. Such a unified voice not only opens doors in Washington, it secures us a seat at every table where critical banking policy decisions are made. The expanded breadth and depth of ABA’s resources will be our members’ greatest asset. It means no matter what your bank’s size, niche, location or charter, ABA is likely to have what you need. ABA also will offer what the industry needs. Solutions—whether products or policy positions—that work. Solutions that are crafted by consensus and tested by diversity. Solutions that will help your bank face today’s challenges, and prepare you to take advantage of tomorrow’s opportunities. BJ Predatory lending video Education is a key to putting a stop to predatory lending. To help bankers promote consumer awareness, ABA offers a 20-minute educational video and a free downloadable brochure. Both the video and brochure are available in English and Spanish versions.
