The kit will “help your employees better understand the issue and help you all communicate with people and businesses within your community,” ABA President and CEO Ed Yingling said in a memo to bank chief executives. One message from the kit: “Banks didn’t cause the crisis, and it is the health and strength of the nation’s banking industry that has kept it from being much worse,” Yingling said. ABA is emphasizing this message during media interviews and educating reporters about the differences between bank and nonbank lenders, Yingling said. It also is working with Congress to ensure that corrective action affects the lenders who caused the problem, not those who didn’t. Using the kit’s contents, banks can communicate with their customers and answer their questions about the turmoil in the subprime mortgage market. To address this growing need, ABA has launched the free, members-only Frontline Compliance Training program. As a part of ABA membership, banks will receive unlimited access to 73 online courses, which were developed with contributions from senior industry compliance experts. With their help, ABA designed up-to-date and appropriate course content to train tellers, customer service representatives, personal bankers, call center representatives, and consumer lenders. The training will equip frontline employees with current regulatory compliance information that is needed to work competently in the banking industry. “We piloted this program for many months, and the bankers who participated were all enthusiastic about it,” said ABA President Ed Yingling. “This free offer will relieve banks of the mounting costs typically associated with training.” ABA’s Frontline Compliance Training program gives bankers the ability to track and document participants’ results, a feature appreciated by bank regulators. The new coverage—called “A-Side Plus”—expands the directors and officers’ policy by providing a separate, dedicated limit of liability to protect bank directors when they cannot be indemnified by the bank.
