OITH Turbo’s new Ecopack hybrid drive concept uses compressed air generated by a train braking to power its hydrostatic drive, generating fuel savings of 15% and cutting noise and emission levels. Trains using Ecopack can opt to switch off the diesel engine when entering and leaving stations, switching it on when appropriate. The compressed air drive can also be used to boost acceleration, meaning smaller engines are needed for the same output. Voith claims that the Ecopack method is more efficient and has a longer life than hybrid systems which rely on batteries.
