Lantal guarantees its textiles for two years, but expects them to remain in use and in good condition for about 10 years, sometimes even up to 20 years. Velvet pile is one of its most successful lines. Made to a high standard by a process it says is unique in Europe, it comprises a mixture of abrasionresistant synthetics for durability and light fastness, and lamb’s wool for good absorption qualities. Its key advantages are that it has a very long life, is comfortable, visually attractive, easy to clean (resulting in lower maintenance costs) and flame-resistant. It is even graffiti resistant, as stains can be removed with a special cleaning agent. The company works with around 80 railway operators worldwide, as well as the leading manufacturers of rolling stock and train interiors. Recent major contracts include providing interior design and fabrics for 13 trains for BLS, Switzerland, 147 Bombardier light rail vehicles being supplied to Frankfurt and six Stadler trains for Austin, Texas. Lantal Textiles’ products are also used on French National Railways’ TGV and the S-Bahn in Zürich. Lantal designer Anna-Maria Müller explains that interior design is usually only considered at a late stage in the development of new rolling stock, with the cost of the textile component typically accounting for less than 0.1% of the total vehicle cost. The visual impact on passengers however is as much as 50%. She lays great emphasis on providing a calm and harmonious atmosphere that passengers can feel comfortable with. Here, colours are extremely important, she points out, as they have a surprisingly powerful effect on mood and psychology as well as symbolic overtones. Lantal has spent the last five years focusing increasingly on developing complete design concepts in cooperation with its customers, who typically comprise manufacturers of trains and seats, as well as railway operators.
