International Railway Journal - August 2007 - (Page 19) FIRE DETECTOR NOT ONLY FOR THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT Requested by the European Directive 2001/85 CE and the rail standard UIC 642 S ince August 2003 it is mandatory to have fire detectors in the engine compartment of any new equipment for public transportation. The European bus OEMs are already familiar with this. In some of the Member States it is an option only and therefore up to the transportation company to minimize the risk by warning the driver with temperature sensors in case of an incident. Within the EU the CE Directive and the successive national laws are not limited to buses only. It is also applicable for rolling stock of public transport. Therefore nearly all new developed EMD diesel engine driven rolling stocks are equipped with our fire detector, warning the operator of fire in the engine compartment. The firedect is a new device and detects fire by radiation and convection and features very high temperature sensitivity. It makes and brakes TTL signals as well as AC/DC currents up to 6A 250VAC. Fire tests in the engine compartment of buses and rolling stock have demonstrated response times between 25 and 130 seconds resulting to the exposure of the flames. The firedect is designed for tough environment condition and sealed for protection grade IP 68. The mechanical function is independent of power sources and operates EMC emission free. It is shock, vibration and acceleration proof accdg. EN 50155, EN 50121 and EN 61373. The standard temperature calibration is 175 +5 -10 ºC.
