International Railway Journal - August 2007 - (Page 21) on standard gauge, with numerous gauge changes,” says Oriol. “Of course, sometimes operators in other countries require a different certification due to specific local requirements.” Another feature of Trav-Ca is its low weight. “The total weight of 72 tonnes makes it one of the lightest locomotives on the market,” says Oriol. As Trav-Ca is a Bo-Bo locomotive, this gives an axleload of just 18 tonnes. The bogies on Trav-Ca are the same as those used on the high-speed power cars built by Talgo and Bombardier, but with the addition of a gauge-changing system developed by Voith Turbo, Germany. The locomotive is 19.4m-long over the buffers, and has a one piece welded steel frame and removable aluminium roof. The cab structure is reinforced to improve driver safety. Considerable attention has been paid to improving driver comfort. The cabs are doublepressurised and hermetically sealed, and the driver’s desk has been ergonomically designed. Trav-Ca has a continuous rating of 3.2MW at the wheel rim and a one-hour maximum output of 3.6MW, with a tractive effort of up to 170kN. Each axle is powered by an 850kW asynchronous four-pole motor with forced ventilation. Passenger success story T ALGO is having considerable success in winning contracts for both its high-speed trainsets and locomotive-hauled tilting passenger trains in Spain and abroad. It has started construction of five day and four night trains for Bosnia, with each set of coaches consisting of nine cars. Delivery is scheduled for 2010-11 to allow time for track upgrading to be completed. In Spain, Talgo has received a follow-on order from Renfe for 30 Talgo 350 high-speed trains for delivery between 2009 and 2011. These will add to the 16 trains already in service on the Madrid - Tarragona high-speed line. Bombardier has a 35% share of this project. Talgo is supplying 44 gaugeconvertible power cars equipped with Bombardier traction equipment to Renfe to add to existing rakes of Talgo 7 passenger coaches to form Talgo 250 trains. This is in addition to an order for 18 complete Talgo 250 trains. By the end of the year, Talgo will complete the first of 10 22-car so-called hotel trains for Renfe. These are all variable-gauge tilting trains and should start to enter service on overnight routes next year. Talgo plans to unveil a new design of sleeping car at the BcnRail exhibition in Barcelona in October. It has also designed a seat that can be converted into a bed, and is looking for a company to manufacture it. regenerative electric brakes are fitted along with pneumatic disc brakes. Talgo has taken a bold step to move into the electric locomotive market, albeit with a specialised product for what should be a growing market as railways seek to solve interoperability problems. But then, Talgo is no stranger to innovation. IRJ Trav-Ca features high-voltage IGBT traction power converters and an electronic control system designed by Team, called Sisteam OCS. The inverter is independent from the traction motors to guarantee three-quarters power should one motor fail. There are two groups of two pantographs to provide 100% redundancy. Rheostatic and Get The Worst Out Of Your Compressed Air Parker domnick hunter is a world leader in the design and manufacture of compressed air purification systems and has been producing innovative products for more than 40 years. It provides filtration and drying solutions for locomotives, rolling stock and other transport systems which use compressed air for their operation. www.domnickhunter.com/railways IRJ August 2007 21 http://www.domnickhunter.com/railways http://www.domnickhunter.com/railways
