International Railway Journal - August 2007 - (Page 23) Mr John M Dineen, president and CEO of GE Transportation, unveils the hybrid diesel-electric/battery locomotive in Los Angeles. Evolution series product manager Mr Len Baran. With the launch of GE’s Evolution Hybrid locomotive, the search for future technology doesn’t stop there. The business continues to research advanced technologies at its Global Research Centres in New York, India, and China. “There is a some real interest from customers in the US and around the world about alternative fuels, such as biodiesel,” says Dineen. “At our Global Research Centre we have been working to understand the short and long-term effects of these fuels on engines and to understand how we can use them.” Today, GE Transportation is seeing interest around the world in its Evolution Series range. This year and next, GE will deliver locomotives based on the platform to customers in Kazakhstan, Egypt, China, Mexico and Australia. “When it comes to the global locomotive landscape, the world is booming,” says Mr Bob Parisi, GE Transportation’s global locomotive leader. “Everyone is in a growth mode. We have never seen so much need for locomotives on a global scale.” Railways around the world are demanding increased haulage capability to improve productivity, which translates into pulling more cargo with the same number of locomotives. Whether it’s in Europe, Asia, South America or South Africa, GE says it is doing a lot of work to understand the application for each region to make the best recommendation for the customer’s application. In Australia, heavy-haul railways are buying the ES44DC locomotive, which can handle the demanding ambient conditions of the Pilbara region. In Colombia, Jordan and South Africa, railways are taking delivery of GE’s C Series locomotives, which incorporate latest technology and accommodate IRJ August 2007 23
