In Egypt, the ES40ACi offers a high-power locomotive for Egyptian National Railway’s need to pull either freight or passenger trains. China, meanwhile, will operate the 4.47MW ES60ACi to haul heavier loads at higher speeds to keep up with capacity demands of the country. GE says it is proving that environmentally-friendly designs can also save money. All of GE’s Evolution Series locomotive models meet either UIC or US EPA emissions standards, meaning the most reliable engines are producing fewer emissions and reducing NOx by using less fuel. “While emissions standards may not apply in all countries, customers can feel good about the added benefit of helping to protect the environment,” says Parisi. “In China, the industry is looking at population growth five years down the road and seeing that diesel may not be able to run in places like Shanghai, where the city is growing exponentially. We may one day see a worldwide focus on emissions, and GE will be ready.” In Poland, Africa and Kazakhstan, locomotives are getting a new lease of life thanks to GE’s modernisation technology. Modernisations are the railway equivalent of heart transplants. GE updates everything from behind the driver’s cab to the end of the underframe, providing up to 20% more fuel efficiency and 50% more haulage capability. In Poland, a GE-modernised M62 meets the current European UIC II emissions standards. says Parisi. “With AESS, a locomotive can shut down its engine to save fuel while continuing to monitor certain parameters so that the engine and batteries are protected.” Virtually all locomotives manufactured today include this technology as part of their fuel saving strategies. Whether locomotive operators are looking to update yesterday’s fleet, realise additional efficiencies with today’s locomotive technology or considering new alternative solutions, it’s clear that they are not short of options. GE Transportation’s launch of the hybrid locomotive is garnering attention around the world, but hybrid is only one piece of GE’s overall fuel and emissions strategy for international applications. Engineers at GE are focussing on building on its Evolution Series technology as its growth platform. A continued flow of innovations is set to emerge from GE for its Evolution Series product line as well as spin-off products into other product lines as GE strives to make the most of the opportunities offered by the world’s rapidly expanding locomotive market. IRJ Onboard options In addition to modernisations, railways have a full range of options for getting the most out of their existing fleet or new rolling stock with onboard technologies that provide additional efficiencies. GE’s Locotrol distributed power system is helping railways in Africa and China use their existing fleets to pull longer, heavier trains and realise fuel savings.
